Seven years later, Sony wants you to remember the Men in Black franchise and how much fun the first three movies were, but also that you would like to see the series branch off with all new characters in foreign locations. With Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones retired from this cinematic universe after the original trilogy, Men in Black: International transports the sci-fi action across the pond to London and introduces some new but familiar partners.
The latest trailer for the Men in Black spin-off sets us up with all we need to know about the man and the woman in black who share co-lead duties while also introducing a new alien sidekick and featuring Emma Thompson as the connecting thread between the previous trio of movies and the upcoming installment. And, of course, no peek at an MiB movie would be complete without plenty of cool gadgets, vehicles, and weapons on display.
Watch the latest look at Men in Black: International down below, but first here’s everything we know about the spin-off:
Are Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones returning for the next movie?
No, the new Men in Black installment is a spin-off focused on the UK division of the apparently international agency.
Who is starring in this version?
Thor: Ragnarok co-stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson lead Men in Black: International as the main MiB agent characters. Hemsworth is the established one, called Agent H, while Thompson plays an American woman who had an alien encounter as a child and has spent her life trying to find and then join the MiB. After accomplishing that, she becomes Agent M.
Liam Neeson, who has already been part of the Star Wars, Dark Knight and Taken franchises, is also part of the main cast of newcomers as their superior, High T, head of the London branch — basically, he’s the UK's version of Rip Torn’s character from the original trilogy. Presumably this will be a comedic part for the generally serious actor, though he could also be a straight man opposite the movie's two goofball leads.
The movie has been described as more of an "ensemble piece” than previous installments. Other new cast members in the MiB universe include Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), who voices a tiny computer-generated alien who works with the MIB on their latest mission, plus Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible - Fallout) as a villainous alien, Rafe Spall (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as another MiB agent and dance duo Les Twins (aka Laurent Nicolas Bourgeois and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois) as more aliens.
Is anyone from the original trilogy returning?
If you’ve been wondering how exactly the new Men in Black spin-off will connect to the original trilogy, Emma Thompson (who co-starred with Neeson in Love, Actually) will reprise her role as Agent O, head of MiB, first introduced in the last installment, 2012’s Men in Black III. How big of a role she’ll have this time, though, is unclear.
Agent O (who was also played by Alice Eve in younger form in MIB3) seems to be the only link and franchise gateway to the new movie. It makes sense that the chief of the titular organization would return for a spin-off set in another branch of the MIB — specifically the UK headquarters.
Will the plot concern an alien threat to the UK only?
While plot details are still under wraps, word is that this movie will deal with an invasion on a global scale and deal more with a larger intergalactic threat rather than a single alien villain hiding among us on Earth. Producer William F. Parkes told Deadline that the script "somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place."
Who wrote this installment?
The writing duo of Matt Holloway and Art Marcum, who previously worked on the scripts for Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight, handled the Men in Black: International screenplay.
Who is directing the movie?
F. Gary Gray, best known for Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious is at the helm of the latest MIB movie.
When can we see it?
Men in Black: International is scheduled to hit theaters on June 14, 2019.
