Those who don’t feel like heading to the theater during the 3D re-release of Avatar this weekend can take comfort in the fact that, yes, the upcoming Special Edition DVD (one of many to hit stores over the next few years, we presume) will include a whopping 16 minutes of new footage (via THR) – making it so there’s something new to be found every 15 minutes, according to one 20th Century Fox exec.
The upcoming theatrical re-release will only include 8 ½ minutes of new footage that will apparently be focused primarily on Pandora and a new creature on the planet that did not appear in the original film. The film will only be available in 3D when it hits theaters this weekend (so keep that in mind when making plans), and the 2-disc DVD/Blu-ray will arrive in stores this November. If you happen to be one of those folks ahead of the curve, a 3D DVD will arrive at some point next year.
As far as what else you can expect from the new footage, Avatar producer Jon Landau said, “"We tried to look at what people have responded to in the film and give them more of that. There's a whole new scene that takes place in the (Na'vi) school, there's more night bioluminescence, there's new creatures, and there is a new action scene. The scenes don't just feel like added scenes -- they are very organic to the story and embellish it."
