Summer time is here! And, if you’re a mom, you know what that means: long, hot days and hard work. Maybe a migraine or two. That’s right, school’s out, everyone! Luckily, the multiplex offers plenty of opportunities for moms to beat the heat and get away for a girls' night out this summer. Cinema is called escapism for a reason.
Hot Pursuit (opens May 8). Women flocked to see Thelma and Louise, so imagine a funny version where heroines Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon (probably) don’t die in the end! Although, it looks like Jim Gaffigan may be filling in for Brad Pitt. Sorry.
Pitch Perfect 2 (opens May 15). The 2012 original was one long, sustained high note – funny, unexpected and awesomely musical. The sequel offers another arrangement that is comedically on key: when Barden College’s a capella Bellas find their professional reputations need a tune up, they look to restore their harmony at an international competition.
Aloha (opens May 29). How to make the perfect romantic dramedy that will appeal to the women of Gen X and Gen Y? Make a Cameron Crowe film reminiscent of Top Gun, set it in lush and romantic Hawaii, and have it star:
· The Notebook’s Rachel McAdams to get our hearts hopeful.
· Bradley Cooper at max charm and blue eye intensity while giving off an air of “I will get my act together if you just love me.”
· Emma Stone to adorbs it up in ways in which we wish she was our best friend.
· And top it off with Alec Baldwin and Bill Murray to provide meaningful, comic relief.
Hearts are already swelling.
Spy (June 5). Bridesmaids/ The Heat team Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig are comedy magic, grownups-only edition. McCarthy plays a CIA desk jockey who gets a shot at becoming an undercover agent, allowing us to see her in a mashup of fave McCarthy character types – the amiable character we love from her CBS series “Mike and Molly” mixed with her characters who try so hard to be badass …always, with mixed results. With a supporting cast of true blue cool – Jason Statham, Jude Law and Rose Byrne –Spy will please on date night but probably, it’s even better as Girls' Night.
Magic Mike XXL (July 1). Hollywood’s hottest actors thrusting, pulsating, and oscillating their pelvises in a way that would make Elvis looks like a preschool teacher. More, please.
Trainwreck (July 17). What happens when Amy Shumer’s sex-loving but commitment-hating journo meets a keeper? Audiences won’t be able to look away.
Ricki and the Flash (Aug. 7). Meryl Streep plays a mom who abandoned her family to be a rock star and is now dating Rick Springfield. Hey, who hasn’t been there? ... said no one. But, those leather pants carry a price when Streep’s rocker has a hard time reconnecting with her resentful adult daughter.
