Right now you're probably thinking to yourself: "Wait, didn't The Runaways just come out, and doesn't Marvel make superhero films – not rockin' Kristen Stewart movies?" Yes, you'd be right on both accounts, which is why this Runaways has nothing at all to do with the Runaways biopic about that all-girl band from the '70s that just hit theaters late last month. This Runaways is most definitely a superhero movie, and it's a pretty cool one to boot.
Based on an original idea and comic by Brian K. Vaughn (Buffy and Firefly superstar Joss Whedon also wrote a few installments), The Runaways follows a group of kids who all learn that their parents are, in fact, a bunch of supervillains. Upset by this discovery – and after learning that they, too, have superpowers – the kids band together to defeat their parents. God, is this not every jaded teenager's fantasy come true – a world where they use their superpowers to defeat their evil parents?
Deadline Hollywood reports that Peter Sollett is in discussions to direct The Runaways for Marvel, and the film will be distributed by Paramount since it's part of their pre-Disney deal with the studio. Sollett is also known for directing Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, which is a film that had some issues, sure, but really did a good job of capturing all the little ticks and tocks of the contemporary teenager. And since folks are comparing The Runaways to "The Breakfast Club with superheroes", I can see why Sollett was chosen.
While Whedon was also rumored to be interested in directing, Sollett was the one to come out front and center – perhaps he had a better vision for the film, or perhaps Whedon will instead take on another movie for Marvel … like, ahem, The Avengers…
