Well, at least one question has been answered. As previously rumored, Sony has decided to bring on newbie director Marc Webb to helm the next Spider-Man movie, and possibly an entire new trilogy. In terms of films directed, Webb really only has one: 500 Days of Summer. However, you've more than likely watched one of the many music videos he's helmed; he's directed artists like Green Day, Three Doors Down, My Chemical Romance, Weezer and more.
Why Webb (aside from his freakishly Spidey-related last name)? Well, Sony liked 500 Days of Summer, and they liked that Webb has a good (dare I say Spidey) sense when it comes to creating content that's relatable to teen audiences. Seeing as this will be a Spider-Man reboot that finds our hero, Peter Parker, back roaming the halls of high school, they needed a director who "knows" teens and can produce a film that's familiar and fresh all at the same time (sort of like 500 Days of Summer, but with a lot more special effects).
It sounds like they want to go in a direction where it's more about the story and characters than about the spectacle. Sure, it's always fun to see which villain Spidey will be up against next, but a good, strong storyline will go a long way with fans (see: The Dark Knight). While I'm not so hot on a darker Spider-Man movie (I'd still like to see them keep these films suitable for the whole family), I do think that putting story first will give them a great head start with this new rebooted franchise.
