No, not all the stories today will be able men who recently passed away (I hope) – and while this is a tiny little news nugget, it's worth putting out there so that you younger folks not familiar with John Hughes might be able to learn about a man who helped raise me and millions of other teenagers with his angst-ridden comedies about love, loss, friendship and high school.
Call it this week's biggest coincidence, but right as the world was learning of filmmaker John Hughes' sudden death at the age of 59, unknown filmmaker Matt Austin-Sadowski was finishing a documentary about the man called Don't You Forget About Me (taken from the classic song featured in The Breakfast Club). It's unfortunate that distribution companies only took notice of Austin-Sadowski's doc after Hughes passed away, but if something good will come out of this it's that more people will learn about Hughes, his films and his life.
Hughes stopped making movies in 1991, and became a bit of a recluse. Not only will this documentary trace his film career, featuring interviews with folks like Kevin Smith, Jason Reitman, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Mia Sara, Kelly LeBrock and Andrew McCarthy, but it will also follow the filmmakers as they journey to Chicago in an attempt to find Hughes and see what he's up to now.
There's no word on where and when we'll be able to watch Don't You Forget About Me, but we'll keep you posted on its progress through the distribution system. In the meantime, check out the trailer below…
