Idris Elba as James Bond? Granted, Daniel Craig still has two movies left on his contract, but in the off-chance he bails early (as so many previous Bond actors have), Bond movie producer Barbara Broccolli has met with the actor about assuming the role.
Elba joins a shortlist of replacements once Craig fulfills his Bond duties, including Michael Fassbender, Hugh Jackman and Tom Hardy. What makes Elba becoming a potential Bond particularly intriguing, aside from the obvious race issue, is that the franchise would drift away from a series of actors portraying the same character to dare we say, a reboot?
Naomie Harris, who stars in the upcoming Skyfall told The Huffington Post that, "I didn't realize that there was this talk [about a black Bond], and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he had met with Barbara Broccolli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond. And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he's a great guy."
Elba has previously said that he would be honored to play the role should the opportunity come his way.
Keep in mind this was only a preliminary meeting with interested actors and Broccoli has not commented on the matter.
It does raise an interesting question though. Would you support a potential reboot and a black James Bond or would you prefer the role to continue being passed down to dapper white guys?
