While promoting Real Steel, Hugh Jackman sat with MTV to discuss, among other things, the potential of going darker with The Wolverine. Jackman addressed the issue saying that there is a temptation to doing two different versions and if there was ever going to be a major comic book character that should get the R-rated treatment (aside from The Punisher, of course), it would be Wolverine.
Jackman did backtrack a bit though saying that there has to be a very good reason to exclude fans who wouldn't be able to get in because of the R rating. He said that through the years, he has met many fans who love Wolverine and he would feel bad if they didn't get to enjoy the sequel.
To that end, the chances of an R-rated Wolverine screening in theaters are slimmer than Andrew Garfield's biceps. Fox is banking on The Wolverine to be one of their summer 2013 cash cows and slapping an R-rating would be the equivalent of leaving money on the table or at least in the Velcro-strapped wallets of tween boys.
The Wolverine could follow the likes of Live Free and Die Hard which screened a mild PG-13 version in theaters and then presented a more appropriate unrated version on DVD. So while it may be fun to fantasize about an F-bombing, blood-soaked Wolverine, we'll have to wait and see if an unrated version is planned for DVD release.
