There was a time when you and your mate could go out and see the newest, greatest movie whenever you wanted to. Friday night, Saturday night, or even sometimes on a random Tuesday afternoon, you could be whisked away for a couple of hours of entertainment. You would laugh, cry,eat too much popcorn, all while watching films made by adults for adults. You had no concern about film ratings, nudity or profanity. Sadly, this movie-going freedom is ripped away from you once you have kids. If you do end up going to the movies, it is generally: 1. animated 2. filled with cute animals who talk or 3. Frozen.
But just because you opted to procreate doesn’t mean that the days of the movie date night are over, they’re just rarer. And you have to be far more mindful of your choices. Here are some tips:
Select Your Movie Carefully
Going out can be expensive. It’s not the movie tickets that get you, it’s everything combined: the tickets, the concessions, and last but not least, the babysitter. You may be looking upwards of $70 just to see a movie. This is why you must do your research. Read reviews, watch previews, talk to your friends and then make an informed decision. It’s best if you and your partner can agree on the same movie. But if not, read our next tip.
Take Turns
He wants the shoot-em-up action blockbuster. She wants the newest feel good romantic comedy. Neither wants to budge – a dilemma for sure. This is where diplomacy comes in. One solution is to take turns. For one movie date, he gets his way, the next time she gets hers. Make a rule that there will be limited complaining about being dragged to something you really don’t want to see. Remember, relationships often include sacrifice and this goes for movie selections as well.
Pick a Grownup-Friendly Theater
If you have one in your town, try a theater that embraces the trend of offering beer, wine and high-end snacks. Many of these offer 21+ shows where alcoholic beverages are sold and the menu caters more to foodies, complete with servers who deliver your order right to your seat. Many high-end theaters also offer luxury seating with power recliners, sofas and love seats. Note to sleep deprived new parents: Reclining may cause drowsiness. If you don't want to pay $20 for a power nap, consider ordering a cup of coffee before you settle in.
Pair Your Movie Pick with Dinner
A fun (and delicious) way to kick up your movie date night up a notch is to pair your movie choice with a restaurant near by. Let’s say a movie takes place in London; then head to have some fish and chips. Or maybe the movie takes place in India, feast on some delicious curry. Just make sure that you leave enough time for dinner and a movie since the babysitter clock is ticking away at home.
Love the One You're With
Sit close, hold hands, and bask in your coupleness. Before the movie starts, focus on your mate and resist the urge to text the babysitter or anyone else for that matter. As a parent, you know how rare it is to have uninterrupted time together, make the most of it!
