So, did you catch the Golden Globes? Here are a few random thoughts on the whole affair, before I send you off to our Awards Watch site for more on the winners and pics from the red carpet (and even more pics in our sister site E!'s Globes pose-off).

First, it's always good to throw a monkey wrench into the Globes, a ceremony that can always be counted on to be more lively than those stuffy, alcohol-free Academy Awards.

Host Ricky Gervais fit the bill quite nicely, appearing with a glass of beer before Mel Gibson took the stage, and later signing off with a plug for world peace, before taking it back and asking everyone to tune into his upcoming HBO show instead.

It was also good to see Cecille B. DeMille Award recipient Martin Scorsese, always the articulate spokesman, speak up for cinema and its role in our collective memories. Plus, long-ime Jeff Bridges fans - and there are a lot of us - could take comfort in his win for Best Actor in a Drama for Crazy Heart, and the standing ovation he received.

The big winner of the night, of course, was Avatar, which picked up Best Director for James Cameron, and Best Picture, making the movie (which also scored number one once more with $41.3 million for Friday - Sunday) the odds on favorite for the upcoming Oscars.

With Sandra Bullock picking up Best Actress in a Drama for The Blind Side, and Precious's Mo'Nique and Inglourious Basterds' Christoph Waltz winning the supporting honors, there's still a chance, though, for the Oscars to spread love to a bunch of diverse movies...at least we're hoping.
