This should come as no real surprise, really. Hollywood loves sequels to popular action franchises. And Hollywood ADORES sequels to franchises that now star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. So after a $51-million opening weekend domestically (and a whopping $132M worldwide), G.I. Joe: Retaliation is giving way to G.I. Joe 3.
Variety breaks the news of the pending sequel, saying that Paramount supports its own decision to delay the opening of Retaliation and release the sequel in 3D. To quote the trade, the as-yet-untitled G.I. Joe 3 will “most definitely be in 3D.”
Which is all well and good, but we’re more interested in which characters might come back. If you’ve seen both Joe movies, you know that Channing Tatum and Ray Park (as Snake Eyes) were the only two original actors to come back for the sequel, and then one of them … well, let’s just say disappeared. The sequel brought in a number of fresh faces, including The Rock and Bruce Willis. But I honestly could see a third Joe movie going with completely new stars and new heroes from the Joe universe.
So tell us, which action stars would you like to see take a role in a third G.I. Joe movie? And are there characters from either the Joe toy line or the early Joe cartoon who you’d like to see become a focal point of the next film?
Similar to the Transformers, there are new characters that could be introduced to freshen up the storylines. Maybe some “deceased” characters somehow could be brought back into the fold?
