Almost every horror movie features some kind of battle between good and evil -- or at least between somewhat heroic and clearly villainous characters! But an increasing number of fright flicks also showcase stand-offs between bad guys, i.e. serial killer vs serial killer or murderous criminal vs. ravenous zombie. Who do we root for then?
As always, we're invited to decide for ourselves. After all, many scary movies give us the opportunity to consider how far we'd go to defend ourselves and our loved ones against home invasions, supernatural creatures, and the undead. Here are a few recent examples of movies that depict fierce, frightening encounters of the fighting kind.
Freddy vs. Jason (2003)
The first part of the clip features a quick yet undoubtedly painful confrontation between Freddy Krueger (from the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise) and Jason Voorhees (from the Friday the 13th series) in a cabin in the woods. Rest assured, the fight between the two notorioius serial killers will be continued.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013)
Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as legendary siblings who are always fighting in their quest to rid the world of witches. It's tough to pick just one moment from all the fight scenes; really, it's the cumulative effect of the battles that impress.
The Crazies (2010)
As the trailer suggests, the remake of George A. Romero's original depends greatly on the creation of an unsettling atmosphere as a mysterious ailment infects the small town of Ogden Marsh, Iowa. Those who are not yet infected must fight for their lives against people they know, most notably in a disturbing, pitiless ambush sequence.
The Horde (2009)
Corrupt cops are exacting vengeance upon a gang of criminals in a high rise when the apocalypse breaks out. The movie is jam-packed with fight scenes, but the one between a massive army of zombies and a few nasty "heroes" stands out for its viciously high body count.
My Bloody Valentine (2009)
A brief underground confrontation ends with a young man in a cage, which keeps him from helping a fellow miner when he's viciously attacked by a masked serial killer wielding a nasty weapon. Sad to say, the fight does not end well for the miner, but it is a tension-filled scene.
