Teenagers, step aside - there's a whole audience of '80s kids who are giddy with excitement about seeing one of their Saturday morning faves coming to life on the big screen. JEM and the Holograms brings back lots of memories to cartoon fanatics who grew up watching the animated series from 1985-1988.

Artist Jerome Lu is definitely one of those Jem fans that can't wait to see the live-action movie about the supergroup of musical sisters with secret identities. Here's what Lu had to say about what it was about the JEM and the Holograms cartoon that captured his imagination as a kid and now as an artist:

“As a kid, my Saturday mornings were filled with two cartoons, "G.I. Joe" and "JEM and The Holograms." Surprisingly Jem became my favorite morning entertainment. (Sorry, Snake Eyes). Something about a mild-mannered girl becoming a pop sensation with her magical earrings was just so cool to me! Plus she had all this amazing technology at her disposal. I became such a fan that I remember for my 4th grade birthday party I asked all my friends to get me Jem dolls and sure enough I still have them to this day. I’m excited to see this new version of the Jem and the Holograms in theaters opening night! It’s showtime, Synergy!”

To celebrate one of his favorite childhood cartoons, Lu created this '80s-inspired original artwork exclusively for Fandango.
