This week’s featured DVD, Law Abiding Citizen, stars Gerard Butler as Clyde Shelton, a devoted family man who witnesses his wife and daughter be brutally murdered during a home invasion. The criminals are caught, but the real killer walks thanks to a plea deal with upstart assistant D.A. (Jamie Foxx). Does Clyde sit still for all of this? Nope—10 years later he embarks on a vigilante rampage against the guy who got away as well as everyone on the side of the law who helped him in a string of assassinations that would make Saw’s Jigsaw proud.
Sure it’s far fetched and probably not the warm-fuzzy date movie you want to see on a Friday night, nor is it going to serve as commentary on our judicial system. That said, it’s an entertaining, violent, gory thrill ride for people who like such guilty pleasures (and okay, I admit, that’s me). The two-disc BD contains both the theatrical cut and the unrated director’s cut, with 11 minutes of unseen footage, plus extras like “The Justice of Law Abiding Citizen.”
