Now that director Joe Johnston has made it clear that they’re in the final stages of casting Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America, rumors regarding who might snag that coveted role are flying fast and furious. While doing press for The Wolfman (which Johnston also directed), he talked a bit about casting Captain America by noting that he wants to cast an unknown American actor who’s between the ages of 23 and 32, though most likely Captain America himself will be in his mid-20s when we first meet him since he’ll be a young soldier in World War II.
Like Marvel did with Thor, the goal for Johnston would be to cast this unknown American and then surround him with more well known actors. But just because Johnston wants to go that route doesn’t necessarily mean everyone at Marvel agrees? According to Cinema Spy, they have it on good authority that Star Trek’sChris Pine is being eyed for the role (and it’d be funny if he was cast since Thor’s Chris Hemsworth played Pine’s father in Star Trek).
Of course, many have since gone on record as saying that they think this rumor has very little substance, but I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Pine wasn’t considered at some point (even though I think he’s too pretty to play a WWII soldier). However, seeing as he still has Star Trek 2 and the new Jack Ryan franchise to work on, I can’t see him being able to commit to not only this film, but also an Avengers film – especially since both would have to be filmed relatively close together.
