Declaring over and over that this is an unconfirmed rumor (at the moment), Collider reports that Vaughn might be the director chosen to helm Star Wars: Episode VII, which was announced as part of the deal Walt Disney struck to purchase LucasFilms. 

 

Vaughn belongs to that generation of filmmakers who grew up on – and were inspired by – Lucas’ original Star Wars trilogy. He has dabbled in action and fantasy in the past, helming the rebooted X-Men franchise as well as Kick-Ass, Layer Cake and the underrated Stardust. If this rumor turns out to be accurate, the producers behind the planned Star Wars trilogy just got the series off on a very strong foot.

 

This, too, explains why Vaughn hastily exited X-Men: Days of Future Past, a sequel he was shepherding along following the success of his X-Men reboot, First Class. Original X-Men director Bryan Singer slipped into the director’s chair following Vaughn’s abrupt departure, but no statements were issued explaining the director’s decision to leave. Maybe he just couldn’t say anything yet?

 

Collider tried to confirm the rumor, and admits that it either will “be confirmed or it will blow up in my face.” 

 

But if Vaughn is, indeed, directing a new Star Wars movie, my excitement for that film will have grown exponentially. How about yours?
