It was somewhat of a throwaway piece of information that was sort of overlooked by many, but during the Cowboys & Aliens panel at Comic Con, Jon Favreau announced that because he wants to shoot the film like a true old-school Western, it just doesn’t make sense to convert or shoot the film in 3D. Surprisingly this got a huge response from the crowd, with thousands of folks cheering the decision to not go 3D with what is essentially one of next summer’s biggest blockbusters.
Is this signaling the end of 3D? Far from it – regardless of whether people boo the format or not, it continues to make a lot of money for films at the box office and will definitely be sticking around for awhile. Until the format begins to lose money, that's when we’ll see some changes and perhaps more filmmakers deciding to shoot in 3D instead of convert.
