Though we're still a couple months away from the debut of Warner Bros. re-invented Sherlock Holmes film (starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson, respectively), that's not stopping the studio from trying to piece together a sequel ahead of time. The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Warners is looking to get started on a Sherlock Holmes sequel with Brad Pitt tapped to play the iconic Holmes villain Moriarty.
Word on the street has it that Moriarty makes an appearance in the Sherlock Holmes movie slated to hit screens in December, though the rumors have ranged from a Brad Pitt cameo as the villain to a brief shot of Moriarty in the shadows. The "on the record" response is that if there is a Moriarty appearance, it's a tiny one – however I have a feeling Pitt will make a cameo, which is why his name is coming up again now with regards to the sequel.
Be that as it may, audiences haven't yet decided whether or not they want to throw down their money for a new Sherlock Holmes film, and Warner Bros. will need to sell them if they want to make enough to warrant a sequel. Right from the get-go the studio has made it known that they'd like this to be their next franchise, though it'll definitely take a clever marketing push to sell American audiences on the British detective, especially since the character brings to mind a snooty, stuck-up Brit with a pipe and a weird hat for most.
