So we’ve finally come to the end of summer, and all we have to show for it is this crummy “Iron Man 4 Prez” t-shirt. Labor Day weekend is finally upon us, and while you prepare to celebrate the impending school year with a barbeque or two, I’m sure you’re also busy planning at least one night out at the movies. Last week Takers surprised some by leading the pack of new releases, but with George Clooney back in theaters that may change. Here’s what’s new this week …

'The American,' 'Going the Distance' and 'Machete'

What’s The Scoop: George Clooney plays an assassin who hides out in Italy while taking on one last assignment.

Why It Might Win The Weekend: Because people like Italy, they like guns and they especially like George Clooney. Put all three together and prepare for the unstoppable.

What’s The Scoop: Justin Long and Drew Barrymore play a couple who must navigate their way through the rollercoaster ride that is a long distance relationship.

Why It Might Win The Weekend: First off, since they’re a couple in real life, Long and Barrymore are just adorable together on screen. Everyone has suffered at some point through a long distance “thing” with someone else, and so there’s plenty to relate to here. It’s just unfortunate that couples already in a long distance relationship can’t watch it together.

What’s The Scoop: Based on the popular fake trailer sandwiched between other fake trailers in the double feature Grindhouse, Machete stars cult character actor Danny Trejo as an ex-Federale who launches a rampage of revenge against his former boss.

Why It Might Win The Weekend: Though it may not win the weekend, this flick definitely wins for best ensemble cast of the weekend. We’re talking Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba, Don Johnson and Cheech Marin.

My Prediction: I think Going the Distance will do all it can to distance itself from the competition, so we’ll go with that.

What about you? Which film do you think has the best shot to win the weekend?
