Last weekend was pretty easy to predict, so it’s really not a surprise to see Resident Evil: Afterlife come out on top. This weekend, however, is a whole different ballgame with a number of new releases arriving in theaters – one of which signals (in a way) M. Night Shyamalan’s return to creepiness. Will the adorable, whip-smart Emma Stone pass this test with flying colors, or is there someone else out there scheming up a devilish plan? Let’s take a look …

Why It Might Win The Weekend: Though he didn’t direct it, M. Night Shyamalan did come up with the original idea the film is based on, and, according to those who’ve seen it, the film kinda rocks. Will it build up enough word-of-mouth in two days to win the box office? What do you think?
What’s The Scoop: Emma Stone stars as a down-on-her-luck high schooler who pretends to hook up with nerdy guys in order to help raise her social status at school. Things backfire, though, when she’s labeled as the school slut.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: It’s a cute and quirky choice, and critics have been raving about Emma Stone – not to mention the film’s snarky, John Hughes-esque undertones. Still, is Stone popular enough to open a film at number one all on her own?
What’s The Scoop: Ben Affleck returns to the director’s chair for a gritty romantic drama about a bank robber (Affleck) who falls for a girl he took hostage on a previous job … though she doesn’t know who he is.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: According to our computers here at Fandango headquarters, The Town is already leading the pack with 47% of the tickets sold. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a shoe-in to win the weekend, but it doesn’t hurt either.
Bonus: In limited release we have films like Never Let Me Go and Catfish, which are both exceptional and worth seeking out if they’re screening in your neck of the woods. Search for them on Fandango to locate the nearest theater.
My Prediction: I think Ben Affleck’s The Town looks fantastic, and who could say no to those freaky bank robber masks? I love you Emma Stone, but I’m going with The Town for the win.
