In a battle not seen ‘round these parts since the mid-‘80s, The Karate Kid remake drop-kicked the competition last week in order to steal the top spot at the box office away from that devilish green ogre and a bunch of guys in a black van with a red stripe. This week things heat up a little bit, as Pixar unveils the third installment in their Toy Story franchise, while Warner Bros. suits up the comic cowboy Jonah Hex for a little gunslingin’ action and Fox Searchlight introduces us to some weird kid named Cyrus. Let’s check it out …
What’s The Scoop: In this third installment of the popular Pixar franchise, all our favorite toys return (plus some new ones) in a story that finds the toys relocated to a day care center after their owner Andy heads off to college.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: C’mon, Woody, Buzz … and an overwhelming number of very positive reviews mean this one is not only heading to the top of the box office, but probably to the Academy Awards too.
What’s The Scoop: Based on the popular comic property about a scarred bounty hunter with supernatural powers, Jonah Hex stars Josh Brolin as said bounty hunter and Megan Fox as, well, the eye candy.
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Well, if you’re in the mood for some pop and a little action this weekend, Hex might be the guy to turn to. While critics haven’t been all too kind, it’s the film that may satisfy those bad boys who think they’re too cool to go see some cartoon about toys.
What’s The Scoop: John C. Reilly stars as a down-on-his-luck single guy who meets the girl of his dreams (Marisa Tomei) at a party, only to learn that she’s got this really, really weird son (Jonah Hill).
Why It Might Win The Weekend: Though it probably doesn’t stand a chance against those Pixar toys, Cyrus really is a charming little comedy that comes highly recommended from yours truly. So, if you’re in the mood for something light, warm and down to earth, go check it out.
My Prediction: Toy Story 3. ‘Nuff said.
