'Avengers' Director Joss Whedon Has a Mysterious New Musical in the Works

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Months before the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, its director, Joss Whedon, had decided to step away from making any further Avengers adventures, and as of April he had no specific plans for any future projects. With six months of rest and time away from Hollywood, his creative juices have evidently been rejuvenated. This week he visited the Oxford University Student Union in the U.K., and said that he's working on something new: a musical. According to Den of Geek, he indicated that the format fits the emotionality of what he’s going for.

Whedon did not provide any other details, but he has two previous original musicals under his belt. Back in 2001, he wrote and directed "Once More, with Feeling," an episode of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer that he created. Reportedly, he spent six months writing the music for the episode, which aired during the show's sixth season, and garnered considerable acclaim.

In 2007, Whedon worked with his brothers Zack Whedon and Jed Whedon, as well as writer Maurissa Tancharoen, to create Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, a musical released online the following year in three 14-minute episodes. Joss Whedon financed it himself, and the final product made quite a splash. Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day starred.

Whedon also directed an episode of Glee in 2010, though he was not involved in writing the script or choosing the songs that were used. Of note, Neil Patrick Harris appeared as a guest star.

In late 2011, Whedon again financed a very personal project: a new adaptation of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing. It was filmed in and around his house in Santa Monica, California, over a period of 12 days while Whedon was taking a vacation from postproduction on The Avengers. He also composed the musical score for the movie.

Based on his past projects and method of working, it could well be that Whedon is planning to make the musical outside the studio system as another low-budget project, in which case we may not hear much more about it until it's finished. On the other hand, if his ambitions are greater than that, it will be fascinating to hear how things develop. Either way, we're eager to see another Joss Whedon musical.
