Marvel fans have been assuming that new characters will be added to the team by the time Joss Whedon gets around to directing The Avengers 2. Prior to today, Ant-Man and The Wasp were the frontrunners to join the sequel, especially since Edgar Wright has been teasing Ant-Man footage at high-profile places like San Diego Comic-Con. And while Ant-Man likely will play a significant part in the sequel, we’re also hearing that a different hero could dive in to the fray … and we might even know who’ll play her.

London’s Daily Mail, which often trades in rumors, reports over the weekend that Emily Blunt and Ruth Wilson are “head-to-head in a race” to land the role of Ms. Marvel in the planned sequel. The character has a rich backstory, having earned her power from the explosion of an alien Kree device (it’s complicated). But Whedon likely will rework her origin to fit into his broader picture.

Blunt, if you recall, was in the running for the Black Widow role that went to Scarlett Johansson back in Iron Man 2. Marvel, it appears, is anxious to get her in a superhero suit. I can’t say that I disagree one bit.

And Blunt’s no stranger to sci-fi action, as audiences can see with Looper, in theaters now. With Avengers 2 likely to head into space, Ms. Marvel fits nicely into the equation, and Blunt would be a fantastic addition to the team. Will it happen? We’ll see, but for now, tell us if you’d like to see Blunt playing Ms. Marvel in Avengers 2.
