With Avatar breaking all kinds of records in terms of 3D tickets sold, naturally other studios are looking at their future movie slates and trying to determine which films can either be shot in 3D or converted. By this time next year, it may already be standard knowledge that any upcoming blockbuster-ish film will also come in 3D, but for now – while the technology is still somewhat new-ish – we'll be hearing random rumors in terms of which soon-to-be-released films will arrive in the format.
First up is Clash of the Titans, which has been rumored to be receiving a 3D upgrade for some time. The Hollywood Reporter tells us today that Warner Bros. has ordered up a 3D test for the film, and will determine within the next 10 days whether it will be worth it to release Titans in 3D as well as 2D. In my opinion, the conversions don't look as good as when the film is actually shot in 3D (both Toy Story movies were converted to 3D and re-released recently), but if Hollywood thinks there's a lot more money to be made with 3D and 2D prints of its available movies, you bet your bottom dollar they'll be converting as much as they can.
Meanwhile, I'm not surprised to hear that Columbia Pictures might be interested in releasing Ghostbusters 3 in 3D as well (hopefully not with some lame title like Ghostbusters 3D). The rumor first appeared on the Marketsaw blog, but in all fairness I'm sure every studio is contemplating whether or not to release their bigger upcoming films in 3D – we just don't know whether Ghostbusters 3 would be shot in 3D (which would take longer, hence why the Spider-Man reboot – which may indeed be shot in 3D – won't be hitting theaters until the summer of 2012), or if it will be shot in 2D and converted.
