Recently my son saw a TV commercial for a program counting down to the New Year. He excitedly exclaimed, “Can I watch that?!” Of course, it looked fun! A huge crowd, rock stars and other celebrities, glittery balls dropping from the sky - what’s not to love?
I smiled at him and asked if he understood what they were getting excited about.
“A party?” he guessed.
I told him about New Year’s Eve and its traditions. I told him about countdowns and midnight and locking arms with friends and singing songs. I also explained about resolutions. I’m not someone who puts a lot of stock in standing firm in resolutions and declarations, but I do think it is fun to think about goals and make lists for the next chapter.
Since my son and I enjoyed a lot of great family movies at the theater this year, we came up with 10 resolutions inspired by some of our favorites.
Minions: Eat more fruit and vegetables.
Pan: Be on the lookout for grand adventures.
The Good Dinosaur: Take a leap with a friend to help you soar.
The Peanuts Movie: Ask the redhead out.
Inside Out: Share your feelings.
Cinderella: Keep believing in love stories.
Shaun the Sheep: Go out on the town!
Goosebumps: Get to know your neighbors.
Hotel Transylvania 2: Try new things.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Don’t believe anything unless you see it with your own eyes.
