Carter Webb (Adam Brody) has just been dumped by his true love Sophia (Elena Anaya). Heartbroken, he moves to Michigan to take care of his ailing grandmother. Once there, he gets mixed up in the lives of the women who live across the street: Sarah Hardwicke (Meg Ryan), the mother of two daughters, Paige, and older sister Lucy. Through his relationships with these women, as well as with his grandmother, Carter discovers that vacancy, which once felt like an end, was only just the beginning of something else.
