Poll: What Is Your Most Anticipated September Movie?

By: Derrick Deane on August 31, 2011 at 5:32PM Comments (25)

As August fades away into our cinematic memory, it will be remembered for the dominant performance put forth by Rise of the Planet of the Apes (your most anticipated movie for August) and The Help, which came in third in our poll and stayed on top of the box office thanks to positive word of mouth and a crop of movies that audiences passed on.

To prove that this isn’t an exact science, the second and fourth most anticipated movies for August were 30 Minutes or Less and Conan the Barbarian, respectively, though both fell flat in theaters. Your three least anticipated August movies were Glee 3D, Colombiana and One Day.

September is set to be a thrilling month at theaters, literally. Nine thrillers hit theaters – the found-footage sci-fi flick Apollo 18, the Helen Mirren-Sam Worthington spy movie The Debt,  sharks eating people in 3D in Shark Night 3D, Steven Soderbergh’s viral outbreak movie Contagion starring Matt Damon, Kate Winslet and Jude Law, the much-buzzed about Ryan Gosling action-thriller Drive, Rod Lurie’s remake of Sam Peckinpah’s Straw Dogs, Taylor Lautner as a young man who finds out he isn’t who he thinks he is in Abduction (insert werewolf joke here), Jason Staham and Rober de Niro trade clichés with Clive Owen in Killer Elite and Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz move into a Dream House.

Those looking for some laughs can turn to these five movies for some comedy – Nick Swardson in the Adam Sandler-produced porn comedy Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, Sarah Jessica Parker in I Don’t Know How She Does It, Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman in Dolphin Tale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt battles cancer with Seth Rogen at his side in 50/50 and Anna Faris looks back at the past twenty men she’s had relationships with and wonders if one of them might be her true love in What’s Your Number?

Rounding out the wide releases are the Tom Hardy-Joel Edergton MMA action-drama movie Warrior (which features a heart-breaking supporting performance from Nick Nolte), the Brad Pitt sports drama Moneyball, religious drama Courageous and a Disney favorite gets the 3D treatment with Lion King 3D.

As we approach awards season, a few early favorites will be arriving in theaters as well. The above mentioned Drive and Moneyball are two of the early contenders. Gerard Butler is getting early buzz for his performance in Machine Gun Preacher, which opens limited in mid-September before expanding at the end of the month. Michael Shannon is also generating buzz for his performance in the apocalyptic drama Take Shelter.

The sleeper hit of the month may be a horror comedy titled Tucker and Dale vs. Evil which opens limited during the last week of the month and is currently boasting a 100% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Now that you know what’s hitting theaters, we want to know which movie you’re looking forward to the most. Vote in our poll below and let us know which movie you’re excited to see.

I'm looking forward to Killer Elite! I love the good fighting action in so many of Jason Statham's films! I may also go to abduction with one of my tween relatives, It looks like it could be good also.

Your theater has not given much advance notice to upcoming films in September. I'm sure that money has been paid for the films that won't come until next spring, but I think you owe moviegoers the information about what is coming soon. Only 3 trailers and no posters is not fair to us.

I am most excited for Straw Dogs...Not even remotely a Kate Bosworth fan, but the movie has Alexander Skarsgard! Come on, there have to be some TruBies out there with me! Plus it has James Marsden, X-Men, anyone? Then I am excited for Drive and 50/50!

Tucker and Dale may be THE FUNNIEST horror/comedy movies that I have EVER seen. The story line is original, which we aren't seeing too much of among all the sequels, prequels and horrid remakes. I have told everyone I know about this movie... I just can't say enough good things about it..... If you haven't watched the trailer, DO IT!... I don't go to see movies in theaters that often, most just don't seem worth my time, or money (until they some out on DVD and I can rent them for $1), but I'll be first in line to buy tickets to see this in theaters!

"Drive", "The Debt", "Straw Dogs"(Or just watch the original), "Moneyball", "Dream house", "Machine Gun Preacher", "Take Shelter" That is a pretty good amount of "grown up" movies for you. "50/50" might also appeal to some over 30s because of the subject matter.

Darn I just noticed "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" is coming out September too. I will definitely see that since I'm a huge Andy Lau fan. And really, if nothing up there doesn't interest you then either you haven't seen the trailers or you don't like movies.

The "Courageous" Looks fantastic in the trailers. Raising father's up to take more responsibility with our children in a loving way. And "Dolphin tail" Looks wonderful for the family as a whole. So tired of old remakes like " Lion King" as a mom seen it too many times. Our famlly prefers movies to enjoy together.

The Debt is the one that will be on my list for good, adult thriller and The Killer Elite will fill the role of action/adventure fare for me! The others, well, I will wait till I have a bad case of insomnia one night in the near future and watch them on the tv.....

None of them sound any good, so I just voted for Lion King because you can't go wrong with a classic.

Drive all the way! I am afraid of the amount of Hype this film is getting but I hope I can ignore it enough so it won't ruin the film. But either way I have been waiting a long time for this film. Looks fantastic. Wow, no love for "Take Shelter" ? That does look pretty decent, I would probably put that on my 3rd or 4th anticipated sept. movie. Oh man! Just can't get over Drive. This Hype better not destroy it.
