It may be hard to believe but San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner. Yes, the week before The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters, the Gaslamp District will swell with 150,000 plus comic and entertainment fans. While studios have yet to release a list of films they'll be touting at the annual convention, we're willing to take a guess at a few films we'll be seeing at the Con.
Release Date: August 3, 2012
Who's In It: Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston
Why It'll Be At SDCC: With the film releasing mere weeks after SDCC, this one is almost a certain lock. Sony has been pairing this movie with Resident Evil: Retribution on prior panels at WonderCon and last year's SDCC, so one final push before the sci-fi action flick hits theaters seems certain. Maybe Sony will even host an early screening?
The Expendables 2
Release Date: August 17, 2012
Who's In It: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Liam Hemsworth
Why It'll Be At SDCC: The first Expendables panel had a surprisingly successful showing and if this panel combines the list of names above (especially tapping into Hemsworth's Hunger Games fan base), Hall H should be jam-packed. We'll probably get a few clips, maybe a new trailer and a surprise appearance from Chuck Norris or Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Resident Evil: Retribution
Release Date: September 14, 2012
Who's In It: Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez
Why It'll Be At SDCC: If there's any film in this list that's a for-sure lock, it's this one. Sony has brought every installment of the Resident Evil franchise to SDCC and WonderCon and this one should be no exception, especially with the release date only a few months off. We'll probably get a few more clips and the always unpredictable yet highly entertaining Q&A involving Jovovich and husband/director Paul W.S. Anderson.
Release Date: September 21, 2012
Who's In It: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey
Why It'll Be At SDCC: This is Lionsgate-Summit's other non-Twilight film. Dredd has been flying under the radar for most of the year and SDCC might be the perfect place to showcase a new trailer, new footage and shine the spotlight on this film as it heads toward its September release date.
Release Date: September 28, 2012
Who's In It: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt
Why It'll Be At SDCC: For a film that no one knew anything about, Looper received a solid reception at WonderCon earlier this year. Added to that is the who sci-fi action element and if you're going to have Willis down for The Expendables, might as well have him double dip with this panel. And then there's JGL's Christopher Nolan connection. The only reason FilmDistrict might shy away from promoting the film at SDCC is the concern that fans will bombard JGL with Batman questions, rather than focusing on Rainn Wilson's film.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 2
Release Date: November 16, 2012
Who's In It: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner
Why It'll Be At SDCC: It's not a certain lock, especially since Stewart doesn't have to double dip like she did last year promoting Snow White. But given the massive turnout on Day One and the general fan fervor, SDCC could very well pack Hall H with Twihards in the morning, like they did last year.
Release Date: TBD 2012
Who's In It: Robert Pattinson, Samantha Morton, Jay Baruchel
Why It'll Be At SDCC: This film's appearance seems to hinge largely on whether Twilight will be at SDCC. If so, Pattinson could do the double dip and sit in on this panel. Plus Cronenberg has his group of hardcore followers. The only question would be if this film, which has had very limited buzz, could fill Hall H.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Release Date: December 14, 2012
Who's In It: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan, Richard Armitage, Elijah Wood
Why It'll Be At SDCC: This film also seems to be a lock for SDCC. The combination of Peter Jackson and the hardcore Hobbit fans seems tailor-made for Hall H. Add to that the negative feedback from the footage screened at CinemaCon last month and Jackson and company will be working hard to win over every single person in the massive room.
Star Trek 2
Release Date: May 17, 2013
Who's In It: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg
Why It'll Be At SDCC: The film has been stuck in the editing room for quite some time now and we've yet to see any footage. SDCC would be the perfect place to roll out a few clips or at the very least, a teaser trailer. It's also well known that J.J. Abrams is a huge fan of the Con.
Release Date: July 12, 2013
Who's In It: Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi
Why It'll Be At SDCC: Guillermo del Toro. Honestly, that's the only reason really. Not only does the SDCC crowd love when the man shows up at a panel, expect some first look footage that will blow everyone's minds.
Release Date: March 1, 2013
Who's In It: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Diego Luna
Why It'll Be At SDCC: Not much is known about this sci-fi drama, but director Neill Blomkamp got a warm reception for his first film, District 9, a few years ago. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see him show off some footage (maybe even a trailer) and get this film on everyone's radar, especially with the excellent cast in tow.
Iron Man 3
Release Date: May 3, 2013
Who's In It: Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley
Why It'll Be At SDCC: True, they did just start filming, but that didn't stop them the first two times. What they'll bring aside from Downey's snarky charm, remains to be seen.
The Bourne Legacy
Who's In It: Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, David Strathairn
Why It'll Be At SDCC: On the hinges of a new trailer that hit today, Bourne is Universal's next major movie. True, Ted and Savages hit theaters before it, but those films aren't SDCC faire. SDCC might be the place for Universal to sway folks that are on the fence about this latest Bourne film.
Release Date: October 5 , 2012
Who's In It: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace, Famke Janssen
Why It'll Be At SDCC: This is a bit of a long shot, but Fox's roster is pretty slim, post-Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The Watch is another long shot possibility, with its sci-fi comedy theme and cast that includes Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill and Vince Vaughn, but will folks pour in to Hall H for that film? The safer bet seems to be on Taken 2, with its established fan base and the potential for Liam Neeson to appear…. and answer endless Dark Knight Rises questions.
Release Date: March 29, 2013
Who's In It: Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, William Hurt
Why It'll Be At SDCC: This all depends on whether Open Road Films decides to attend. If so, we could be in for a double dose of Stephenie Meyer adaptations. The sci-fi thriller element certainly has the SDCC appeal and if fans are already camping out to catch a glimpse of Bella and company, The Host could definitely hit Hall H with some footage and possibly a full-length theatrical trailer.
A few other possible films in attendance: Man of Steel (Zack Snyder's Superman flick), Oblivion (Universal's sci-fi epic headlined by Tom Cruise), Oz: The Great and Powerful (Sam Raimi's first attempt at the fantasy genre), Django Unchained (definitely doesn't fit into the SDCC mold, but Tarantino's appeal could be enough to bring the film to Hall H) and Frankenweenie (SDCC loves Tim Burton).
