Yesterday (Leleti Khumalo), a kindhearted South African village woman who brings hope and happiness to her poverty-stricken family, is horrified to find out that she has AIDS. Upon receiving her diagnosis, she realizes there are two things she must do. First, Yesterday makes the trek to the city of Johannesburg, where she informs her laborer husband of the awful news. After this painful confrontation, she then resolves to live long enough to see her daughter (Lihle Mvelase) start school.
