- What is Viridiana / Black Orpheus about?
VIRIDIANA, 1961, Janus Films, 90 min. One of director Luis Buñuel’s most brilliant films. A nun finds herself corrupted by her uncle, Fernando Rey – until she turns the tables by installing a group of beggars and lepers in his mansion. Bunuel gradually weaves a web of contradictory impulses: faith, hope, charity and selflessness become inextricably bound with lust, hypocrisy, sloth and greed in the schizophrenic universe of Old World Latin Catholicism.
BLACK ORPHEUS (ORPHEE NEGRO), 1959, Janus Films, 100 min. Dir. Marcel Camus. Dropped down into the Rio de Janeiro slums during an annual festival - Brazil’s own “Carnaval,” Orpheus (Breno Mello) drives a trolley and is known for his gift of song. He is soon to be married to Mira, for whom the wedding cannot come soon enough. That is, until he meets Eurydice, who has troubles of her own. A mysterious man stalks her through the Rio streets. Orpheus and Eurydice find their way through Carnaval chaos in search of respite.
