In a film based on the novel by Halldór Laxness, an eager seminary student named Umbi (Sigurdur Sigurjonsson) is sent by the Bishop of Iceland to investigate Sera Jon Primus (Baldvin Halldorsson), a small-town pastor who has been accused of such bizarre crimes as refusing to bury the dead. However, upon his arrival, he discovers the whole village is full of eccentrics and oddities, including shape-shifters and magicians. Before long, even Umbi is falling under the spell of the enchanted town.
