Politician Sir John Chilcote (Ronald Colman) is buckling under the strains of daily life, which include a troubled relationship with his oft-neglected wife, Eve (Elissa Landi) ; a high-pressure position in Parliament; and a secret drug dependency. Desperate to ease his tensions, Chilcote hires his jobless, doppelgänger cousin, John Loder (also Colman), to take over his public responsibilities.
