- What is The Great Dane: The Tragic Life and Career of MGM Silent Comedian Karl Dane about?
- The story of Karl Dane is almost a cautionary tale for our own turbulent economic times. The tall, lanky former carpenter from Denmark shot to stardom when he was signed to play the part of Slim in King Vidor's silent masterpiece THE BIG PARADE, which made its debut at Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in 1925. He went on to star in more than 40 films; however, according to Hollywood scandal books, he lost his contract when talkies revealed his Scandinavian accent. Reduced to poverty at the height of the Great Depression, Dane operated a hamburger stand near the very studio gates where he had enjoyed fame and fortune only a few years before, finally committing suicide in 1934. Laura Petersen Balogh, author of the recent book Karl Dane: A Biography & Filmography (McFarland), will draw on her five years of primary research in Denmark and the U.S. to provide an overview of Dane's dramatic life and career.
