What is Revanche about?

In the Austrian countryside, Robert and Susanne, (Andreas Lust and Ursula Strauss), have built a cozy house and are trying to start a family. He’s a rural policeman and she works at the local grocery and spends time with her elderly neighbor. In the red light district of Vienna, Alex (Johannes Krisch), the errand boy for a pimp, has started a clandestine relationship with Tamara, (Irina Potapenko), one of his boss’s prostitutes. Desperate to escape their dismal lives in the city, Alex plans a robbery at a bank in the countryside. In a cascading set of events, the slam-dunk theft at the faraway bank goes awry. Alex is forced to hide out at his grandfather’s farm as the plot takes a tortuous and unexpected turn. With meticulous, elegant direction, Spielmann creates a tense, existential, and surprising portrait of vengeance and redemption, and a journey into the darkest forest of human nature, in which violence and beauty exist side by side.
