As the leaves change colors outside, moviegoers happily retreat inside to relish in the wonder and spectacle to be found on the big screen. This fall, a wondrous variety of films can be enjoyed in theaters nationwide, from action spectaculars to surprising comedies to tense dramas. Here's a peek at what lies ahead.
DON’T LET GO (AUG. 30)
'Selma'’s David Oyelowo gets a call from his recently murdered niece ('A Wrinkle in Time'’s Storm Reid) in this fantasy thriller. Is she a ghost? Is their connection traveling through time? Either way, he now has a chance to solve the case and find her killers, with her help.
Return to Derry, Maine, for this second part of Stephen King’s terrifying It set decades later. Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) is floating around town again, bringing Bill (James McAvoy), Beverly (Jessica Chastain), Richie (Bill Hader) and the rest of the now-grown Losers Club back to defeat the clown for good.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Donna Tartt, this coming-of-age drama stars Ansel Elgort (‘Baby Driver’) as a young man with a troubled relationship to the art world after his mother was killed in a museum bombing when he was a boy. Nicole Kidman and Jeffrey Wright co-star.
Exotic dancers scam wealthy Wall Streeters in this crime comedy based on a true story. Jennifer Lopez, Constance Wu (‘Crazy Rich Asians’), Lili Reinhart (TV’s ‘Riverdale’) and rapper Cardi B are among the women who become desperate when the financial crisis has a detrimental effect on their profession.
Brad Pitt heads to space in the latest from filmmaker James Gray (‘The Lost City of Z’). The actor plays an astronaut searching for his father (Tommy Lee Jones) at the edge of our solar system, a mission that also concerns the fate of human life on Earth.
One of the most iconic movie characters of all time, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) comes out of retirement in this fourth sequel to 1982’s ‘First Blood.’ This time, the Vietnam veteran turned action hero takes on a Mexican drug cartel that has kidnapped a young girl.
Continuing the pop culture phenomenon that ran from 2010 to 2015, the movie sees the Crawleys hosting the King and Queen at their titular English country estate. Most of the cast from the PBS series, including Hugh Bonneville and Maggie Smith, reprise their roles for the big screen.
In this animated feature, a magical Yeti named Everest is found far from home. Now, a few teenage friends must escort him back to his family in the Himalayas, safe from capture by a wealthy hunter. The voice cast includes Eddie Izzard, Sarah Paulson and Chloe Bennett.
Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix delivers a fresh take on the titular DC Comics villain in this Batman-less crime drama inspired by Martin Scorsese movies. Robert De Niro even shows up opposite the Clown Prince of Gotham City for the so-serious spin on the superhero genre.
Loosely based on a scandal involving real-life astronauts, this drama stars Natalie Portman as one of NASA’s finest. That is, until she begins to lose her grip on reality. Jon Hamm is her fellow-astronaut lover, while Zazie Beetz plays a trainee who completes a messy romantic triangle.
Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Cousin It, Lurch, Grandmama and Thing are all animated and still altogether ooky in the latest movie based on Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons. The voice cast includes Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Bette Midler, Chloe Grace Moretz and Snoop Dogg.
Groundbreaking visual effects and two-time Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (‘Life of Pi’) brings us Will Smith vs. Will Smith. The actor pulls double duty as a past-his-prime hitman and his younger clone, who has less experience but is in better shape and looks more like ‘Independence Day’ era Smith.
From the duo behind the 'Bad Moms' movies comes a comedy about a guy (Adam Devine) whose new smartphone is as mean as it is intelligent. Also, it is sentient and obsessive. Rose Byrne voices the foulmouthed device, while Alexandra Shipp co-stars as the woman coming between them.
The new comic-drama from Taika Waititi ('Thor: Ragnarok') revolves around a young boy (Roman Griffin Davis) in Hitler's Germany who innocently follows his Nazi leader until he learns that his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl in their house. Sam Rockwell also stars.
The maternal instincts of Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) are put to the test when her goddaughter Aurora (Elle Fanning) announces her intention to marry the son (Harris Dickinson) of a rival (Michelle Pfeiffer) with evil intentions. Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ed Skrein also star in the dark fantasy.
Ten years after a zombie uprising, an unlikely family (Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Abigail Breslin) face a new assortment of foes, including bloodthirsty survivors and battle-tested zombies who surprise and confound them. The horror-comedy also stars Zoey Deutch, Rosaraio Dawson, Luke Wilson and a few surprises.
The literal power struggle between Thomas Edison (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon), who backed Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), plays out in this historical drama about the battle of electrical currents. Tom Holland also stars as young businessman Samuel Insull, an Edison ally and co-founder of General Electric.
American icon Harriet Tubman finally gets the movie treatment with this biopic from acclaimed filmmaker Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou). Widows standout Cynthia Erivo stars as the titular hero, best known for her missions to free slaves via the Underground Railroad. Janelle Monae co-stars in the historical drama.
Edward Norton headlines a crime drama that explodes out of the past as a private detective seeks to solve the murder of his mentor (Bruce Willis). Norton also directed and cowrote the script; the cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Michael Kenneth Williams and Willem Dafoe.
Linda Hamilton and Arnold Schwarzenegger return as Sarah Connor and T-800 in 'Terminator: Dark Fate'. Tim Miller ('Deadpool') helms this direct sequel to 'Terminator II: Judgment Day'; Mackenzie Davis, Natalia Reyes, Gabriel Luna and Diego Boneta also star.
John Cena finally meets his match: children. In this comedy from Nickelodeon Movies, the wrestler-turned-actor-turned-'Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?' host plays an elite firefighter who rescues three young siblings and becomes their guardian. Slapstick hilarity ensues with help from Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer and John Leguizamo.
Grown to adulthood, Dan Torrance (Ewan McGregor) has buried his secrets from 'The Shining,' but his nightmares are awakened when he encounters a young woman stalked by an evil cult. Based on Stephen King's novel, the horror thriller also stars Rebecca Ferguson.
Kate (Emilia Clarke) works at a department store as Santa's elf, but what she really wants is a storybook romance with the beguiling Tom (Henry Golding). Can her wishes come true? Michelle Yeoh, Patti LuPone and Emma Thompson also star in the entrancing romantic comedy from 'Spy' director Paul Feig.
From director Roland Emmerich ('White House Down') comes an action drama based on real- life events during World War II, as leaders plan and soldiers fight a legendary battle. Patrick Wilson, Luke Evans, Dennis Quaid and Woody Harrelson lead the cast.
Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska star in visionary filmmaker Elizabeth Banks' bold new adventure. The dazzling action spills out all over the world as the unconventional agents meet a whirling variety of challenges with unexpected, incredibly fun methods.
A designer (Matt Damon) and a driver (Christian Bale) team up to revolutionize the automobile racing business by winning a 24-hour race. They must also compete with their own personal demons. James Mangold ('Logan') directed.
Con artist Roy (Ian McKellen) knows all the tricks of his trade, but he has never known anyone like Betty (Helen Mirren). Intending to swindle her fortune, he finds himself falling for her and possibly endangering his future. McKellen and director Bill Condon previously teamed on 'Mr. Holmes' and the award-winning 'Gods and Monsters.'
‘Avengers: Endgame’ directors Anthony and Joe Russo produced this action thriller led by ‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman. He plays a disgraced NYPD detective seeking redemption by taking down a couple of cop killers (Taylor Kitsch and Stephan James). Sienna Miller and J.K. Simmons co-star.
Tom Hanks fully embodies the legendary Fred Rogers, whose television show inspired millions of children worldwide. Directed by Marielle Heller ('Can You Ever Forgive Me?'), this biographical drama focuses on the warm friendship that develops between Mr. Rogers and a journalist (Matthew Rhys).
Disney's highly-anticipated animated adventure travels to a dark forest in an enchanted land where Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven hope to discover the origin of Elsa's magical powers. Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown lead the voice cast.
Filmmaker Rian Johnson ('The Brothers Bloom,' 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi') assembles an all-star cast for an old-fashioned comic-mystery. Daniel Craig stars as a detective tasked with unmasking the killer of a family patriarch; Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Katherine Langford, Michael Shannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette, Don Johnson and Christopher Plummer join the fun.
Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith are enjoying their first date together when tragedy strikes and a police officer is killed. The ugly incident forces them on the run in this tense, timely drama. Bokeem Woodbine and Chloe Sevigny also star; director Melina Matsoukas makes her long-awaited feature debut.
