Saw's Greatest Traps
We want to play a game. Since 2004, the Saw franchise has terrorized audiences with its innovative (and gruesome) traps. In preparation for Saw 3D, we take a look back at some of the series' most infamous traps. Don't worry, no physical harm will come to you...although be forewarned if you have a weak stomach...

Saw 5
Blade Table Objective: Brit and Mallick, our final two victims, must hold their hands into the saws and lose enough blood to fill a single ten-pint beaker which in turn would open a door to their freedom and save them from nail bombs mounted on the wall. Result: Hindsight being 20/20, they insert their hands into the saws and lose half their bodies' amount of blood and their forearms are sawed in half. Both pass out from blood loss with Brit uttering the final words, "We won." Mallick will appear in Saw 3D.

Saw 3
Body Chains Objective: The trap features ex-con Troy, who awakens in an empty classroom with eleven chains hooked into his flesh at various points on his body. In order to escape, Troy must break free of the chains before a timer expires and detonates a nail bomb set in front of him. Result: Troy manages to painfully rip the chain links out of his skin, except the one attached to his lower jaw. Unable to escape, the nail bomb explodes, killing Troy. It is later revealed that the trap was inescapable as the door was welded shut and the final chain was linked to the strongest bone on the human head, making it virtually impossible for Troy to remove it with his bare hands.

Saw 3
Hog Pit a.k.a. The Pig Vat Objective: Upon entering a room, Jeff hears a man screaming for help. Climbing up a ladder, he sees a man shackled to the bottom of a silo with a metal brace strapped around his neck. When Jeff plays the tape, it is revealed that the man is the judge who presided over his son’s murder trial and was the one who gave the murderer a light sentence. Jigsaw gives Jeff the opportunity to "sentence the man's soul straight to hell." Cue the rotten pig carcasses and saws. Result: In order for the judge to survive, Jeff must let a furnace containing his child's possessions to burn, which will then produce a key to free the judge. In the following sequence, the Judge is shot by a booby-trapped shotgun in the room containing "The Rack."

Saw 4
Knife Chair Objective: A drug addict responsible for killing John's (a.k.a. Jigsaw) unborn child Cecil is placed in Jigsaw's very first trap. His arms and ankles are bound by blades and he is slowly bleeding out. In front of him is a panel made of knife blades that, if pressed hard enough, frees him from his restraints. Result: After futilely screaming for help, Cecil begins to push his face into the blades. After several tries, the chair apparatus he's sitting in collapses. Standing up with restraints still lodged in his arms, Cecil threatens to kill John a.k.a. Jigsaw. He lunges at him, but Jigsaw sidesteps him and Cecil falls into a pile of hanging razor wire where Jigsaw leaves him to die. This also gives Jig the idea for "Razor-Wire Maze."

Saw 2
Needle Pit Objective: A pit located in the middle of a room is filled with thousands of dirty, used syringes. A locked door in the room contains an antidote (the victims are trapped in an abandoned house with nerve gas being pumped in). The test is originally designed for Xavier, a drug dealer. Result: One of the rare instances where the trap doesn't kill the victim if they don't complete it, Needle Pit is still a memorable Saw trap. Xavier picks up Amanda and throws her into the pit to find the key that will unlock the door. Amanda finds the key, but Xavier fumbles around with the key and is unable to unlock the door before time expires.

Saw 5
Pendulum Trap Objective: Seth Baxter is a murderer who was originally sentenced to life in prison, but is released after five years on the grounds of an undisclosed technicality. Believing Seth didn't learn the impact of his crime, Jigsaw places him into the Pendulum Trap. A large, bladed pendulum swings above Seth. In order to make it stop, Seth must place both of his hands in a vice located on either side of him and crush them. Result: Seth eventually crushes his hands and the pendulum stops. Then, after a brief pause, it starts again and eventually slices Seth in half, rendering the trap inescapable. It is learned later that Hoffman, not Jigsaw, used the trap to avenge his sister, who was dating Seth, and was later murdered by him.

Saw 1
Reverse Bear Trap Objective: The infamous trap is attached to heroin addict Amanda Young. The Jigsaw Puppet, a.k.a. Billy, appears and informs her that she has 60 seconds to remove the trap before it opens like a reverse bear trap and subsequently rips her jaw apart. To free herself, she must fish the key out of the stomach of a "dead" Donnie Greco lying across the room. Result: It is revealed that Donnie isn't actually dead, but rather in an opiate-induced paralysis, unable to feel pain. Amanda cuts into his stomach and retrieves the key, unlocks the device and throws it to the floor just as it snaps open.

Saw 3
Ribcage Harness a.k.a. The Angel Trap Objective: Allison Kerry is a detective who worked on the Jigsaw murder cases and awakens suspended above the floor of an abandoned building with a leather harness hung from the ceiling by numerous chains. Two sets of needles are attached to her torso with each needle hooking onto an individual rib. Hanging in front of her is a jar of acid with a key resting at the bottom. Result: After some hesitation, she plunges her hand into the acid and retrieves the key. With her severely corroded hand, she unlocks the padlock on the front of the harness. She realizes that she is unable to remove the harness itself and that the trap is inescapable. She raises her arms and grabs the chains she's hanging from as the two arms attached to the harness quickly arch upwards like a pair of wings (hence the name of the device), causing the needles embedded in her torso to rip both sides of her ribcage out in opposite directions. She collapses and dies.

Saw 6
The Flesh Scale Objective: Two victims, Eddie and Simone, are placed in adjoining cells, with each victim equipped with a head harness with screws positioned on either side of their temples. The screws will drill into the person who fails the test. In order to survive, they are given utensils to cut off their own flesh and toss down a chute which leads to a scale located between the cells. After 60 seconds, whoever has the least amount of flesh on their scale dies. Result: Eddie takes an early lead by slicing off his stomach fat but as the time ticks down, Simone grabs a meat cleaver and hacks away at her upper arm. With seconds to spare, she tosses her arm down the chute and "wins" the test. Eddie's head harness activates and drills into his head.

Saw 3
The Rack a.k.a. Twisting Crucifix Objective: Timothy Young, the victim of this trap, turns out to be the man responsible for the car accident that killed Jeff's son. The victim is strapped to a device that resembles a crucifix, his head held in place by a rotating lock, while his hands and legs are held in place by spikes through the hands and feet. Each section begins rotating 180 degrees, one by one, taking his arms, legs and head to their bone-breaking limits. The only way for Timothy to survive is for Jeff to grab a key that's booby-trapped to a shotgun trigger. Result: After much delay, Jeff manages to untie the key from the shotgun and rushes over to Tim just as his head begins to rotate. However, he is unable to locate the keyhole in time and Tim's neck is fatally broken. The gears slow down after Tim's head has twisted around 180 degrees.

Saw 2
Venus Fly Trap a.k.a. Death Mask Objective: The trap consists of a harness strapped to Michael Marks' chest. Attached to the harness is a pair of metal masks, one in the front and one in the back of the head. Inside the mask are several nails protruding. The device is connected to a spring timer, and if not removed in time, the mask snaps shut, similar to a Venus Fly Trap. In this particular instance, the only way Marks survives is if he can obtain the key to the lock, which just happens to be buried behind his right eye socket. Result: With a scalpel, Marks attempts to surgically remove his eye but can't bring himself to do it. Tossing the scalpel across the room in anger, he accepts his fate and when the timer expires, the mask snaps shut.
