In Hollywood, it's always the season for horror, which means we have the perfect horror movie for you to watch today in honor of St. Patrick's Day. But that's not all! We've selected horror movies for every holiday, so bookmark this page for easy reference throughout the year.
By Tyler Doupe
This wacky low-budget horror film tells the tale of a soldier who is back from the dead and has an axe to grind--literally. Sam is targeting draft dodgers, tax evaders, and anyone else who crosses the United States government. It’s a silly premise, but the film was made with a heavy emphasis on satire, so the audience is treated to a bloodbath and plenty of chuckles.
This film set the horror boom of the late '70s/early '80s in motion, the holy grail of the slasher film and the holy grail of Halloween themed horror films. Jamie Lee Curtis solidified her status as a bona fide scream queen as a babysitter stalked by an escaped mental patient terrorizing his hometown. It manages to be completely terrifying, even though it mostly stays away from gratuitous violence.
Thankskilling is one of the only horror-themed Thanksgiving films in existence. It is about as campy as they come, but the filmmakers responsible realized just how ridiculous the concept of a killer turkey was and used the farcical nature of the film to their advantage. What we get is a pretty funny, absolutely ridiculous film that will appeal to most diehard horror fans in the mood for a little festive November viewing.
The 1974 Black Christmas predates even Halloween as one of the earliest prototypes of the slasher film. It is brutal, shocking, and a December tradition in most horror loving households. Look for early performances from Margot Kidder and Olivia Hussey as sorority sisters stalked by something or someone who just keeps calling.
We prefer the lesser-known Bloody New Year to the other option, New Year's Evil. It is very surreal and has some highly unique concepts at play as the cast travels to an island stuck in a time warp where it’s New Year's Eve every day. Bloody New Year is a great diversion for those wishing to stay in on this (often annoying) holiday.
This flick is a horror staple for the month of February. It is regarded as one of the most violent mainstream stalk-and-slash films to come out of the early '80s. My Bloody Valentine has a likable cast, and offers the viewer a couple of twists and turns along the way. If you and your significant other eschew the flowers, candy and obligatory pricey dinner, here's a lovely horror option to cuddle up with.
Ah, the obvious choice for St. Patrick’s Day. Who doesn’t like to see a homicidal, wisecracking leprechaun raising havoc? The films are campy and even laughable, but they offer a certain sense of nostalgia as well as a good alternative to dealing with the mob scene that transpires at nearly every watering hole on March 17.
Not a major holiday to most people, but we might as well give a nod to this Candyman sequel that reveals more of slave Daniel Robitaille's back story and explains his odd nickname when he's summoned to New Orleans. Suddenly Mardi Gras suddenly becomes WAY less of a party.
Preppy Vassar student Muffy St. John (Deborah Foreman of Valley Girl) invites her college friends to her island cabin for a weekend of fun, sun, and possibly murder. No joke, this 1986 slasher film is the perfect, and obvious, choice for celebrating April Fool's Day.
This grimy 2006 indie horror film will have you wanting to take a shower instead of hunting Easter eggs after watching a handicapped boy get tormented for 85 minutes before the Easter Bunny shows up seeking vengeance on his attackers.
OK, it's not SET on the holiday like the previous choices, but this pulpy, shlocky bit of Troma goodness has just the right amount of kitsch we know and love from '80s horror. Fun Fact: Friday the 13th was filmed at the same time on the opposite side of the lake.
