Long before Angelina Jolie appeared on screen with her daughter in 'Maleficent,' stars have acted alongside their children since the earliest days of Hollywood.  Here are just a few of the many multi-generational acting families that have graced the silver screen.

Father and son:  Will & Jaden Smith

Catching the acting bug seems to come early in the Smith family.  Will Smith first starred along side his son, Jaden, in the 2006 film, 'The Pursuit of Happyness.'  The two have appeared together several times since then.

Mother & daughter:  Blythe Danner & Gwyneth Paltrow

Coming from a showbiz family, it only made sense that when Gwyneth played Sylvia Plath, the part of Sylvia's mom would be played by none other than Gwyneth's mother, Blythe Danner.

Mother & daughter:  Susan Sarandon & Amurri Martino

In 'The Banger Sisters,' Susan Sarandon plays the mother of her real-life daughter, Amurri Martino.

Mother & daughter:  Diane Ladd & Laura Dern

Not only have Diane Ladd and Laura Dern appeared on screen together multiple times, they also made Oscar history together when they were the first mother and daughter to ever receive Oscar nominations for the same film: 'Rambling Rose.'

Mother & daughter:  Janet Leigh & Jamie Lee Curtis

Ever since Janet Leigh met her fate at the Bates Motel in 'Psycho,' she has been a horror legend.  It was only fitting then that she appear with her daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, in the horror film 'Halloween H20: 20 Years Later.'

Mother, daughter, grandkids:  Maureen O'Sullivan, Mia Farrow, Mia's kids

Featuring three generations, 'Hannah and Her Sisters' starred actress Maureen O'Sullivan alongside her daughter Mia Farrow and her grandkids.

Parents & sons:  Ozzie, Harriet, David and Ricky Nelson

The real-life Nelson family got to play themselves in the 1952 film 'Here Come the Nelsons.'  Already stars on radio, the film served as a pilot for the Nelson's soon-to-be hit sitcom, 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.'

Father & daughter:  Ryan & Tatum O’Neal

In 'Paper Moon,' Ryan O'Neal plays a grifter who uses his daughter as his accomplice.  Though only 10, Tatum caught the attention of Academy voters and became the youngest performer ever to win an Oscar.

Father & daughter:  Henry and Jane Fonda

Henry Fonda appeared onscreen with his Oscar-winning daughter, Jane, in the 1981 film 'On Golden Pond.' Though he appeared in hundreds of films, Henry never won a competitive Oscar -- that is until he finished this film. 

Parents & son:  Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara & Ben Stiller

Ben Stiller's parents have been appearing together as the comedy team "Stiller & Meara" for years, so it only made sense that they would each make an appearance in Ben's comedy 'Zoolander.'

Father & son:  Martin Sheen & Charlie

The father of a family filled with talented actors, Martin Sheen appeared with son Charlie in the 1987 film ”Wall Street.”

Father, son, grandson:  Kirk Douglas, Michael and Cameron

Featuring three generations of the Douglas family, the 2003 film 'It Runs in the Family' starred Kirk Douglas; his son, Michael; and grandson, Cameron.

Father & daughter:  Jon Voight & Angelina Jolie

When Oscar winner Jon Voight starred with daughter Angelina in 'Lookin' to Get Out' in 1982, he had no idea that one day she would go on to win an Oscar of her own. Two decades later they reteamed as a father and daughter in 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.'

Mother & daughter:  Judy Garland & Liza Minelli

Judy Garland and Liza appeared together when Liza was just a small child in the film 'In the Good Old Summertime.'  With such a talented mother, it is no shock that Liza would go on to win an Oscar for her work in the film 'Cabaret.'

Mother & daughter:  Bette Davis and Barbara Merrill

Bette Davis shared the screen with her daughter, Barbara Merrill, in the 1962 film 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.'  The experience may not have been all that pleasant for Barbara, since she gave up acting, wrote a book trashing mom and later became a minister.
