From 'GoldenEye' to 'Jupiter Ascending': Spotlight On Sean Bean
Sean Bean is famous for mostly playing characters that tend to die tragic or gruesome deaths. With his new film, ‘Jupiter Ascending,’ we’ll find out if there's a similar fate in store for him. In honor of the sci-fi epic’s release, here are some of Bean's most memorable roles.
Patriot Games (1992)
GoldenEye (1995)
Only Bean has the distinction of battling both Jack Ryan and James Bond on the big screen. As Trevelyan, Bean plays a former 00 agent who faked his death and battled it out with old pal, 007. Cause of death? Stabbed. By a satellite array.
Ronin (1998)
This gritty spy thriller answers the question of what post-Cold War operatives do with their spare time. Answer: Steal stuff, shoot guns and get into lots of inventive car chases, obviously. Bean's trigger-happy Spence spends much of his time engaged in a game of one-upmanship with CIA spook, Sam, played by Robert DeNiro.
Don't Say a Word (2001)
This film serves as another reminder not to double-cross Sean Bean. Here, he plays a sinister jewel thief who crosses paths with Michael Douglas, only to get buried alive for his troubles.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Bean took a slightly more heroic turn when he played the well-meaning but corruptible Boromir, in the first part of Peter Jackson’s ‘LOTR’ trilogy. His character died full of Uruk-Hai arrows, but not before finding some redemption first.
Troy (2004)
Bean got his chance to play one of the greatest heroes in Western literature when he took on the role of Odysseus, in this adaptation of Homer's ‘The Iliad.’ He was presented as an ally and mentor to Brad Pitt's fiery warrior, Achilles. Unfortunately, we never got to see a sequel focused on Odysseus' long, winding journey back home after the fall of Troy.
National Treasure (2004)
Leave it to Nic Cage to bring Bean back to his villainous roots. In this globetrotting adventure, Bean’s ruthless financier dukes it out with Cage’s Benjamin Franklin Gates for possession of the Declaration of Independence -- and the treasure map hidden within it.
Silent Hill (2006)
This 2006 thriller has the distinction of being one of the few truly decent video game-based movies. Bean plays a man named Christopher Da Silva, who desperately searched for his wife and daughter after they disappeared into the otherworldly town of Silent Hill. Bean reprised his role in the 2012 sequel, where Christopher and his daughter's positions were reversed.
The Hitcher (2007)
In this remake of the classic 1986 horror film, Bean takes over the titular role from Rutger Hauer and torments a couple of innocent highway travelers. Never has a Sean Bean character so justly deserved their gruesome death.
Game of Thrones (2011)
Bean’s noble Lord Eddard Stark proved to be one of the few truly good characters on the show, which made it all the more tragic when Stark lost his head. By now, viewers have learned that no character on the HBO series is truly safe.
Jupiter Ascending (2015)
The latest from the Wachowskis casts Bean in a more heroic light. His Stinger Apini is just your typical bio-engineered soldier living a quiet life on Earth until fate intervenes.
