The Internship is making its way to theaters on June 7th. In anticipation of this tale of a down-on-their luck duo that vies for an internship with Google, we are reminded of some famous pairings that left a lasting impression on us. We revisit 10 of our favorite on-screen comedic duos that we would like to see reteam for another outing – in the form of a sequel, spinoff, guest appearance, or otherwise. Who would YOU like to see back together?
Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in Wedding Crashers
Reunited, and it feels so good…The Internship's Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson were pure comedic gold in the 2005 film Wedding Crashers. The duo was raucous and crude, as they made mostly unwanted advances at an array of bridesmaids, but somehow managed to worm their way into our hearts. It's why we're so glad they're back together.
Jason Lee and Jeremy London in Mallrats
T.S. and Brody were brilliant as well-meaning 20-something slackers who spend their days aimlessly wandering the local mall vying to win their girlfriends back. Mallrats didn’t make a splash during its theatrical run, but found its audience on home video – which is appropriate, given the film is targeted at a crowd that rarely leaves their parents’ basement. A sequel is not likely, but cameos in an upcoming Kevin Smith film would be more than welcome.
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in Step Brothers
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly were downright hilarious as feuding 40-year-old man-children turned BFFs: bathroom humor, brotherly beatdowns, the rap video "Boats 'N' Hoes"—what more could you want? A follow up was in the works, along with a corresponding rap album, but as of last report both have been put on hold.
Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas in Strange Brew
One of the most notorious Canuxploitation films, Strange Brew is a beloved classic to this day. There isn’t much to the story: Bob and Doug get jobs at the local brewery and discover something is amiss. But, with Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas writing and directing the film, that simple setup was all you needed. Not likely, but we'd love a sequel that checks in with the duo after all these years.
Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels in Dumb and Dumber
The characters were brought back together for a prequel in 2003 with different actors. But, what we are really interested in is a sequel that catches up with these doofuses nearly 20 years after their cross-country road trip dragged the bawdy humor of the '70s and '80s kicking and screaming into the '90s. Dumb & Dumber 2 is in development, with a release set for 2014 and Emma Stone being pursued for a part in it.
Jack Back and Kyle Gass in Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny
Jack Black and Kyle Gass have always had terrific chemistry, no doubt due to their offscreen friendship. As far as what territory a sequel would explore, it’s anybody’s guess; maybe instead of searching for a guitar pick, they're looking for a missing drumstick? Though no follow up is in the works, Black has hinted that the pair may take their shot at Broadway!
Bette Midler and Shelley Long in Outrageous Fortune
It's a fairly rare but welcome occurrence when female comedic duos take the big screen (we'll see what happens when Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock join up for The Heat this summer). Long and Midler (also terrific with Lily Tomlin in 1988's Big Business) clashed as the demure Lauren and loudmouthed Sandy—a remake that found two women realizing they are dating the same con man could be great.
Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino in Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion
A terrible made-for-TV prequel with different actors came out in 2004. But, what fans of the first film really want to see are Kudrow and Sorvino reprising their roles as the titular characters. Perhaps a sequel would find the ladies attending their 25-year reunion? Last year, Mira Sorvino said that she was on board for another installment if the studio would green-light it. Let’s fold scarves.
Statler and Waldorf in Jim Henson’s Muppets
We can't wait to see all of The Muppets reunited for another feature film; 2011’s The Muppets proved that Statler, Waldorf and the gang could still drive ticket sales and the sequel is due in theaters March 2014. Admittedly, it’s not just Waldorf and Statler we want to see brought back together – but why not give the heckling curmudgeons a spinoff of their own?
Dana Carvey and Mike Myers in Wayne’s World
It’s party time, excellent! A third Wayne’s World film may be just the thing to revitalize Mike Myers' and Dan Carvey’s careers. The characters are so iconic and ripe for introduction to a new generation. It might be interesting to see the guys adapting to the advent of 21st century technology and becoming an Internet sensation. Since Myers and Carvey buried the hatchet, a third seems more likely than ever.
