Every woman wants him and every man wants to be him! George Clooney returns to the big screen in The American, playing an assassin hiding out in the Italian countryside while waiting for his next assignment. But Clooney started his movie career in some lesser known works...

Return of the Killer Tomatoes! (1988)

Yes, that's right...one of the first (tomato) splotches on Clooney's resume was this low-budget, now cult-classic movie about, well, killer tomatoes! Clooney played Matt Stevens, a pizzeria employee. I can't tell you if he survives or not -- that would be giving it away.

Red Surf (1990)

Clooney played Remar and Doug Savant played Attila, a couple of surfer/drug dealers who plan on having one last big deal go down before it all turns sour. This gem of a movie also starred Gene Simmons and Dedee Pfeiffer, Michelle's younger sister.

One Fine Day (1996)

From starring alongside Dedee Pfeiffer in Red Surf to her sister Michelle in this romantic comedy, Clooney proved he could start to hold his own as a charming leading man.

Batman & Robin (1997)

At the height of his 'E.R.' TV fame, Clooney took on a huge comic book action movie in the form of Batman. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a flop and almost killed the franchise completely until Christian Bale stepped in as Batman almost 10 years later in Batman Begins (2005).

The Peacemaker (1997)

The very first movie ever released by the studio Dreamworks SKG was this action thriller directed by Clooney's 'E.R.' producer and director Mimi Leder. Clooney played a special forces Army colonel and Nicole Kidman played a nuclear weapons expert.

Out of Sight (1998)

The first of many collaborations with director Steven Soderbergh was this under-appreciated crime/comedy/romance pairing Clooney as a career bank robber with the beautiful Jennifer Lopez as a US Marshall who is out to capture him.

Three Kings (1999)

One of the first films made about the (first) Persian Gulf War was this action/adventure story that starred Clooney along with Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube. Directed by controversial director David O. Russell, it was reported that Clooney got so upset with the filmmaker that he punched him on the set.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

Clooney starred in the first of three collaborations with the Coen Bros. which was an adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey" set in the deep south of the 1930's. Clooney even gets to show off his singing chops.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

Based on the best-selling book by Sebastian Junger about the tragic true story of a fishing boat that got caught up in the storm of the century. Clooney played fishing boat captain Billy Tyne.

Ocean's Eleven (2001)

In his first of three Ocean's movies, all directed by Steven Soderbergh, Clooney takes on the role of Danny Ocean, leader of a gang of con artists assembled to take down three major Las Vegas casinos. Other members of his gang included Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Bernie Mac.

Solaris (2002)

Director Steven Soderbergh, producer James Cameron and Clooney team up in this remake of a 1972 Russian movie of the same name. The cerebral sci-fi drama was considered a flop, but has a few devout admirers.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005)

Clooney stepped into the director's chair for a second time taking the reigns and acting in this critically acclaimed black-and-white drama that received six Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director for Clooney.

Syriana (2005)

Packing on the pounds and adding a beard earned Clooney an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in this drama/thriller about the CIA and the oil industry.

The Good German (2006)

Working again in black-and-white, and with director Soderbergh, Clooney portrays an American military journalist in post WWII Berlin who gets drawn into a murder investigation. It's an homage to classic films like The Third Man and Casablanca.

Michael Clayton (2007)

Nominated for seven Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor for Clooney, this drama/mystery was about an in-house fixer for a giant coorporate law firm in New York City. Clooney plays the title character, the Mr. Fix-It who gets in over his head.

Leatherheads (2008)

Unfortunately, Clooney's last directorial effort about 1920's football just didn't click with audiences and ended up being a flop at the box office. The film also starred John Krasinski and Renee Zellweger.

Burn After Reading (2008)

Clooney inhabits the bizarre character of a goofy US Marshall/lethario in this oddball comedy from the Coen Bros.

Up in the Air (2009)

Jason Reitman, of Juno fame, directed Clooney to his third Oscar nomination for acting in this human drama about a man just trying to make a connection.

The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)

Clooney starred alongside Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Kevin Spacey and some goats in his writing/producer partner Grant Heslov's feature film directorial debut. This comedy is based on a book of the same name.

The American (2010)

The American is the latest from George Clooney where he gets to hang out in Italy while frolicking with beautiful women -- it's a tough life, but someone's got to be George Clooney.
