11 Actors You Won't Believe Have Never Been Nominated for Oscar
As they say, “it’s an honor just to be nominated.” Tell that to these Hollywood stars who, despite all the respect and acclaim they’ve earned over the years, have yet to attend the Academy Awardsas nominees.
Richard Gere
He's seen his costars from 'Chicago' (2002), 'Primal Fear' (1996), 'Pretty Woman' (1990), 'Unfaithful' (2002) and 'An Officer and a Gentlemen' (1982) get attention from Oscar, but incredibly, Gere himself has never been nominated.
Meg Ryan
Perhaps the Academy couldn’t get past her bubbly rom-com image, because Ryan's powerhouse performances in 'When a Man Loves a Woman' (1994) and 'Courage Under Fire' (1996, pictured) were both overlooked at Oscar time.
Jim Carrey
Funnymen don’t often vie for big awards, but Carrey has courted Oscar on several occasions, most memorably with his 1998 hit, ‘The Truman Show,’ and the 1999 Andy Kaufman biopic, ‘Man on the Moon’ (pictured). Oscar, however, has so far rebuffed the actor’s advances.
Cameron Diaz
Everyone thought that Carrey's 'The Mask' costar was a shoo-in for her revelatory turn as a mousy wife in 1999's 'Being John Malkovich’ (pictured). Everyone but the Academy, that is. At least Diaz snagged a Golden Globe nomination for her work.
John Cusack
Diaz’s ‘Malkovich’ costar has also been ignored by the Academy, despite starring in a litany of Oscar bait films like 1989’s ‘Fat Man and Little Boy,’ 1990’s ‘The Grifters’ and 2007’s ‘Grace Is Gone’ (pictured).
John Goodman
Now here’s a guy you’d think would have already racked up a ton of Best Supporting Actor nominations. But no. Not for 2012’s ‘Argo’ or ‘Flight,’ and not for any of his celebrated collaborations with the Coen Brothers.
Bruce Willis
It’s easy to write off Willis as an action star and thus undeserving of Oscar glory. Yet, when you think of all the nominations showered upon ‘Pulp Fiction’ (1994) and ‘The Sixth Sense’ (1999), it’s a bit unfair that he should be ignored both times.
Donald Sutherland
It seems impossible that this veteran actor, who has appeared in more than 100 features over a 50-plus year career, has not garnered a single Academy Award nomination in all that time. Even Richard Gere is shocked.
Kevin Bacon
How many degrees from Kevin Bacon is Oscar? One degree too many, as far as this actor is concerned. Despite worthy films like ‘The Woodsman’ (2004, pictured), ‘Mystic River’ (2003) and ‘Apollo 13’ (1995), he remains un-nominated.
Scarlett Johansson
Yes, she’s a sex symbol. Yes, she can kick ass. But Johansson’s also a very good actress -- she’s already got a Tony Award on her mantel. Hopefully, it’s just a matter of time before the Academy also recognizes her work.
Michael Keaton
If you know him only as Batman or Beetlejuice, watch the 1988 drama ‘Clean and Sober’ (pictured) and you may agree that Keaton deserved some Oscar love that year. Word 'round the campfire is that Keaton's much-lauded performance in 'Birdman' could break the curse.
