Ever since 20th Century Fox teased footage from Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past at San Diego Comic-Con, fans who couldn’t be in Hall H have been wondering when those scenes would show up in an official trailer that could be played, analyzed and enjoyed by mutant lovers around the globe.

Today is that day.

Following a Twitter conversation with X-Men fans (that can be tracked using this link), Fox has dropped the first official look at the next X-Men sequel. It’s the same footage screened in Hall H, and it lays out how Singer plans to connect the universe of his original two X-Men films with the younger First Class cast. It will involve Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) venturing back into his younger body to reconnect with Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), who has given up hope on the human race and needs to rediscover his compassion before an enemy rises up and triggers a future war.

The clip looks amazing. John Ottman’s score is majestic, and the laundry list of mutant characters – both old and new – stretches for miles.

Are you an X-Men fan? Is this the type of movie you were hoping The Last Stand would be? Is it possible that First Class has raised the bar on the X-Men franchise, and that Singer continues to meet (or even exceed) expectations with what’s sure to be a sprawling, time-traveling story?

And lastly… when are we going to see some Sentinels?!

X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in theaters on May 23, 2014. What do you think of this first trailer?
