After a whopping eight Harry Potter films, Warner Bros. is just now beginning to envision an upcoming film slate that doesn't include a Harry Potter movie. So what do they do? Well, they look around for another coming-of-age property – perhaps one that would entice some of those Twilight fans to fork over their dollars.
Variety tells us that the studio has officially begun the Harry Potter Replacement Project by acquiring Beautiful Creatures, the first book in a five-novel series. Richard LaGravanese (P.S. I Love You, Freedom Writers) has signed on to write and direct the film that, if successful, will probably spawn a new franchise. What's it about, you ask? Well, we've got teenagers from small towns and star-crossed lovers – it's sorta like Twilight, but wrapped in different paper. Here's a brief description:
"Ethan Wate, a popular high school student, hates living in a small town in South Carolina where nothing happens—until he meets and becomes bewitched by Lena Duchanne, a 16-year old whose family has moved back to town and who wishes for a mundane life. The star-crossed couple has to confront an age old curse that has haunted her family for generations, as she comes to grips with her powers."
