One of the things we do in our family is the game of compare and contrast. This is helpful when you have a kid who plays the “But how come they get to have a dog?” card. When that happens we state the fact: Not all families are the same. Then we compare how our family is similar and different from the dog-having family. About 99.8 percent of the time this exercise rocks and it's family-building and wonderful. (The .2 percent involves the having of dogs... obviously.)

When our family first saw the trailer for Hotel Transylvania 2 we instantly recognized a lot of ourselves. No, we are not monsters (at least not after coffee consumption) and no, we don’t own or operate a hotel. But, we are a close-knit multigenerational family, and seeing that represented in a kids’ film is pretty great and unusual. Sure, there are a few others that focus on the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, Whale Rider and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory come to mind, but those are few and far between.

Our family watched the first Hotel Transylvania when it came out in 2012 and found it very funny. Who knew Adam Sandler could be so hilarious as the voice of Dracula? In the first film Dracula is having a hard time accepting that his daughter, Mavis, has grown up. (AND that she has fallen in love with a human!) I won’t reveal much more in case you haven’t seen the film and want to stream it before catching the sequel.

What we know about Hotel Transylvania 2 is... Dracula has a grandson, Dennis. When Dennis’s mom and father go out of town it is “Vampa” Drac who is in charge of watching him. From what we have seen in the trailer, lots of antics ensue!

My mother and son are already cracking up over this plot as it is a storyline they are all too familiar with. When I go out of town for work, it is grandmother/grandson adventure time over here as well. I feel very lucky that my son and my mother are so close. I shared a similar bond with my grandfather and it is exciting to see that same spark of connection interwoven between generations.

I think multigenerational story appeal is one that should be coming into its own, especially those that can be enjoyed together en famille! We could be the next great demographic! And Hotel Transylvania 2 can lead the charge.
