Fans who thought The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 might be one of the last franchise finales we see on the big screen in this new era of ever-evolving cinematic universes probably won't be surprised by the news that the Hunger Games series ain't done yet.

According to Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns [via THR], more Hunger Games movies are on the way... and they'll likely be prequels.

Recently we heard that Disney has every intention of making Star Wars movies every year until audiences stop going, and the same can probably be said for the Marvel superhero movies. Well, add Hunger Games to that growing list, as Burns said the franchise will "live on and on."

While we're probably done with Katniss' story, it appears the studio is exploring the prequel route. "The one thing that kids say they missed (from the early Hunger Games films) was there was no arenas," Burns said. "If we went backwards there obviously would be arenas."

Considering the fact that there were over 70 previous Hunger Games before Katniss' story picks up, there's definitely a lot of room to explore. The big question is how far back do they go? Do they back up just far enough to include either characters from the existing Hunger Games movies, or do they go all the way back to the beginning to show us how the Hunger Games came about in the first place?

What do you think?

Currently there's no word on when we could expect these new prequels to hit theaters, but look for Lionsgate to move rather quickly to take advantage of the current popularity of the series.
