Sister Act

A few years ago remaking movies from the '80s was all of the rage -- and while that trend is certainly going to continue for the foreseeable future (the '80s had a lot of great movies, after all), we're already starting to edge into '90s-nostalgia territory. Surprisingly, one of the movies leading that decade's remake charge is none other than the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg classic Sister Act.

Yes, the movie where Whoopi Goldberg pretends to be a nun so that she can hide from the mob is getting a remake. You remember this, don't you?

Disney is producing the new version, which will be written by the duo of Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah (Legally Blonde) and produced by Allison Shearmur (Cinderella). Plot details aren't known at this point, nor is the level of Whoopi Goldberg's involvement, but expect it not to stray too far from the original.

And if you're wondering why Sister Act, you've probably forgotten that the original movie was actually a massive hit. It grossed $231 million worldwide, which is nearly $400 million if you adjust for inflation, and spawned a sequel. Of course Disney is going to try to re-create that. Plus, movies with big musical numbers are in these days, so dust off your nun-lovin' dance moves and prepare for lots more Sister Act heading our way.
