Want to know what’s coming soon to digital and what to watch right now on Vudu? Here is your weekly guide to the latest releases:
What are the latest new releases to watch right now?
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the biggest movie of the year — and one of the biggest movies of all time — and now it’s available to purchase digitally, in 4K UHD, on Vudu. And you won’t find this on any of the streaming services, so you’re going to want to pick this up ASAP. Plus, in addition to the phenomenal hit film, you’ll also receive access to bonus material, including a blooper reel, an Easter egg spotlight, behind the scenes featurettes and more.
The thrilling third solo installment in Spidey’s current cinematic iteration (starring Tom Holland as the Marvel superhero) is also a crossover with past incarnations of the franchise. After teaming up with fellow Avenger Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), our friendly neighborhood wall-crawler has to face villains from the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield eras. And maybe he’ll get some help from other versions of himself as well…
What movies are great to pair with those new releases?
Whether you’re familiar with the Spider-Man movies of the past or not, you’re going to want to marathon all eight of the character’s solo efforts when you pick up Spider-Man: No Way Home. Start off with Sam Raimi’s trilogy of Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 then make your way through The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 before catching up with the Tom Holland bunch, including Spider-Man Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home. You can purchase them all together!
I also think you’ll want to watch other installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that feature Spidey, namely Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Plus, you should grab Doctor Strange. And for more multiverse fun with the character, you have to pay a visit with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Then jump to the other big comic book company and pre-order the upcoming animated feature Teen Titans Go! & DC Super Hero Girls: Mayhem in the Multiverse.
What are some great St. Patrick’s Day movies to watch this week?
Put on some green and grab a shamrock, because St. Patrick’s Day is happening this week! And you’re in luck because Vudu is celebrating with a sale on movies with some Irish spirit. More than 150 titles have been curated, including some of my personal favorites like Far and Away, Brooklyn and The Magdalene Sisters. I’d also recommend a rockin’ double feature of The Commitments and Sing Street.
Also, you can pick up an animated duo of The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea or the profane delights of The Guard and In Bruges. If you prefer classics, there’s John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara in The Quiet Man and Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. And for the horror fans, you can pick up all eight installments of the Leprechaun franchise individually or bundled together. Also, find plenty of movies starring Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan, Daniel Day-Lewis and Cillian Murphy.
Are we celebrating any big movie and TV anniversaries this week?
This week marks the 30th anniversary of the release of the iconic thriller Basic Instinct, starring Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas. Also, Sidney Lumet’s Death Trap and Blake Edwards’s Victor Victoria both turn 40 years old while David Lynch’s cult classic Eraserhead turns 45 and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather, the Kurt Vonnegut adaptation Slaughterhouse-Five, Sidney Poitier’s Western Buck and the Preacher all turn 50.
Going back further, the medieval musical Camelot turns 55 years old this week, Ed Wood’s Plan 9 from Outer Space turns 65, the suspense comedy My Favorite Brunette turns 75 and the Humphrey Bogart romance picture Love Affair turns 90. Also, F.W. Murnau’s silent cinema masterpiece Nosferatu was released in German theaters 100 years ago this week.
More recent titles with anniversaries include David Fincher’s Panic Room, Pedro Almodovar’s Talk to Her, the first Resident Evil, the original animated feature Ice Age, the spelling bee documentary Spellbound and the Disney animated sequel The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, all of which turn 20 years old this week. Also, James Wan’s Dead Silence turns 15 and the action comedy 21 Jump Street turns 10. And Disney’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast is already 5 years old!
Can you recommend some more great movie deals on Vudu?
Learn to love reworked ideas with Vudu’s Originals & Remakes sale. Pick up the 1933 version of King Kong plus Peter Jackson’s redo (there’s also the guilty pleasure 1976 remake). Also, you gotta love the classic Scarface from 1932 and Brian De Palma’s take starring Al Pacino. The collection also includes the Disney reimagining such as the animated Aladdin and its live-action counterpart. And many of the pairings can be found in bundled deals such as the two True Grit movies and the two versions of Sabrina.
