Want to know what’s coming soon to digital and what to watch right now on Vudu? Here is your weekly guide to the latest releases:
What are the latest new releases to watch right now?
The hit family film Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is hopping onto digital this week. James Corden reprises his role as the voice of the title character in the sequel, alongside returning live-action stars Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson. In this movie, Peter leaves the garden and heads into the big city after feeling misunderstood by his friends and family. David Oyelowo joins the live-action players as a shady publisher while Lennie James voices an older rabbit who winds up getting Peter into more trouble than ever. If you love the original, which is based on the iconic children’s stories of Beatrix Potter, you’re sure to enjoy this follow-up, which actually has the better Rotten Tomatoes score of the two.
Another hit sequel I recommend this week, but not for younger viewers, is A Quiet Place Part II. I highlighted John Krasinski’s follow-up in a previous guide, but now it is also available to rent digitally on Vudu as well as to purchase. In the sequel, Cillian Murphy joins the cast of survivors attempting to evade creatures with a heightened sense of hearing. Emily Blunt stars again while Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe are back as two of her children. You can also view the five bonus features, including a featurette on the visual effects, when you rent or buy the movie.
What movies are great to pair with those new releases?
The obvious movie to pair with Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway is the first Peter Rabbit movie from 2018. You could watch the sequel on its own, but the original shows you how Peter and his friends all came together to be a sort of family with the McGregors. You can pick up both installments together in a bundle and save. And if you and/or your kids can’t get enough of Beatrix Potter’s characters, check out the Nickelodeon series Peter Rabbit and the 1971 family film Tales of Beatrix Potter. Meanwhile the Beatrix Potter biopic Miss Potter, starring Renée Zellweger as the famed author, is currently available for free. I also recommend the unrelated but delightful Paddington and Paddington 2 and Disney’s live-action Winnie the Pooh movie Christopher Robin.
For A Quiet Place Part II, I’ve previously recommended some great horror pairings for the sequel, but seeing as how Emily Blunt has another new movie out in theaters this Friday, I’ll focus on what else to watch with her in the cast. Aside from the obvious pick of the original A Quiet Place, of course (you can still get them together in a bundle, by the way). Watch her fight more aliens in Edge of Tomorrow, or go up against a werewolf in The Wolfman. See her as the mother of a powerful child in Looper, or as an FBI agent in Sicario. And enjoy her in an early supporting role dealing with a monster of a boss in The Devil Wears Prada.
Are there any other big movies coming out this week?
The biggest movie of the year is coming to digital this week. F9: The Fast Saga, the latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise, will be available to rent on Vudu on Thursday, July 29th. Learn about Dom’s long-lost brother, played by John Cena, and see them go at it like siblings do — brawling atop moving vehicles and racing against one another for the security of the world. Also: this sequel goes to space! Yes, it’s true! Join the Fast fam, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Jordana Brewster, the returning Sung Kang and my favorite in this movie, Nathalie Emmanuel, as they drive and fight and fight and drive.
Also out this week, one day later, is one of the year’s best movies: In the Heights. Jon M. Chu’s screen adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning Broadway musical hits Vudu for rental on Friday, July 30th. The song and dance spectacular stars Anthony Ramos as he hosts a mix of narratives in the New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights. He’s attempting to leave the city but also woo a woman (Melissa Barrera) with her own dreams. Corey Hawkins and Leslie Grace lead another romantic storyline while Olga Merediz steals the whole movie as an abuela to many in the Heights.
What are some great movies loved by Olympic athletes to buy this week?
Fandango recently asked members of the U.S. Olympics team to name their favorite movies. While you’re enjoying their athletic feats in Tokyo this week, why not check out their movie picks as well? Basketball player Sue Bird named the Matt Damon and Ben Affleck drama Good Will Hunting, sprinter Allyson Felix chose the Eddie Murphy fish out of water comedy Coming to America, surfer Kolohe Andino picked Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood and high jumper Vashti Cunningham named Kill Bill.
Wheelchair rugby player Chuck Aoki highlighted the comedy Airplane!, triple jumper Christian Taylor named Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down, soccer player Julie Ertz talked about her love for the football drama Remember the Titans, wrestler Tamyra Mensah-Stock celebrated Disney’s The Little Mermaid, skater Nyjah Huston says to watch the Djimon Hounsou and Leonardo DiCaprio drama Blood Diamond and beach volleyball player Trevor Crabb picked the Adam Sandler golf comedy Happy Gilmore.
Soccer star Megan Rapinoe named her favorite movie as being The Shawshank Redemption, karate champ Tom Scott says the greatest movie of all time is the 1959 epic Ben-Hur, rugby player Perry Baker chose Training Day starring Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke, swimmer Katie Ledecky loves the romantic comedy Notting Hill and track and field athlete Scout Bassett picked, with acknowledged bias, To Kill a Mockingbird. Vudu also currently has a sale on inspiring sports movies, some involving the Olympics.
Are we celebrating any big movie anniversaries this week?
This week marks the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of the cult classic summer camp comedy Wet Hot American Summer. Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes remake and the Japanese animated feature Millennium Actress also turn 20 while the Farrelly Brothers’ bowling comedy Kingpin starring Bill Murray and Woody Harrelson turns 25. The Top Gun parody Hot Shots!, the Kathleen Turner detective movie V.I. Warshawski and the Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder buddy comedy Another You all turn 30.
Going back further, the sci-fi family film Flight of the Navigator and the Jackie Gleason and Tom Hanks father and son drama Nothing in Common both turn 35 this week. The cross-country road race comedy The Gumball Rally turns 45, the campy TV superhero series spin-off Batman: The Movie turn 55, the Japanese monster movie Mothra turns 60, Disney’s animated classic Alice in Wonderland turns 70 and the historical biopic Mary of Scotland starring Katharine Hepburn as Mary Stuart turns 85.
More recent titles with anniversaries include Best Picture nominee Little Miss Sunshine, Michael Mann’s Miami Vice, the teen comedy John Tucker Must Die and the animated feature Tales from Earthsea, which all turn 15. Also, John Michael McDonagh’s hilarious crime comedy The Guard, Miranda July’s The Future, Joe Cornish’s fun sci-fi thriller Attack the Block, Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs, the fascinating documentary Resurrect Dead and the rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love all came out 10 years ago.
Can you recommend some more great movie deals on Vudu?
Vudu’s latest Summer of Savings deal is focused on Superfandom, featuring all your favorite franchises on sale for 25% off. You can pick up bundles of entire movie series, such as the Middle-Earth 6-Film Collection, including all three Lord of the Rings and all three Hobbit movies. For horror fans, get the Chucky 6 Movie Collection. If you’re more into superheroes, there’s the Dark Knight Trilogy bundle, the Superman 6 Film Collection, including two versions of Superman II, and the 11-movie X-Men Collection.
You can also buy individual titles and match them with other favorites. I’d pair Steven Spielberg’s A.I.: Artificial Intelligence with Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, and Christopher Nolan’s Inception with Brandon Cronenberg’s Possessor. Also, Barbarella and Flash Gordon would make a terrific double feature, as would the very different Philip K. Dick adaptations Blade Runner and Total Recall. And I can’t help but pair up the flawed but enjoyable comic-adaptation flops Popeye and Howard the Duck.
