Everyone knows that dogs are man’s best friend, but do you know how that came to be? Sony’s new historical drama Alpha answers the age-old question with a fictional depiction of the first human to have a loyal canine companion.
Here’s everything you need to know about the movie:
What is Alpha about?
The premise of Alpha involves the first bond between early man and an ancestor of today’s domestic dog. Set in Europe about 20,000 years ago, during the end of the last Ice Age, the drama follows Keda, a young hunter who becomes separated from his tribe. While braving the elements to find his way home, Keda develops a friendship with a prehistoric wolf.
Who stars in the movie?
Kodi Smit-McPhee, who plays Nightcrawler in X-Men: Apocalypse, stars as Keda. Most of the movie follows Keda in his survival alongside the wolf, so he’s the only major human character. But Leonor Varela (Blade II), Jens Hultén (Skyfall), Natassia Malthe (Elektra) and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Atomic Blonde) also appear in supporting roles.
What are some similar movies?
Other survival movies like Alpha, most of them involving wolves or dogs, include Never Cry Wolf, White Fang, The Call of the Wild, The Revenant and Far from Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog. Also, Alpha should be enjoyed by moviegoers who enjoy prehistoric man movies, such as Quest for Fire, 10,000 B.C. and One Million Years B.C.
